I bought a truck cheap at auction. 2008 F250 6.4L and 160k miles. When I got it, it would turn over very very slowly when trying to start. Maybe 1-2 times before cutting off. Over a day or two, I replaced starter and batteries, cleaned up some wires and it may have improved slightly but no where near enough to start. I pulled off the belts and tried to turn it over by hand but couldn’t. I tried a few more times to key start and it eventually slowed to 1/4 turn per attempt. Pulled the glow plugs and tried but it didn’t help. Seems odd it has rotated probably 30+ times but is slowly getting worse. I am no mechanic. Is this a sure sign that I’ve got a bad piston (or more) or is there something I can try before starting to tear it all apart? Thanks!
Thanks. It’s definitely not good. I’m considering putting a new engine in it. I’ve gotten quotes from local mechanics ranging from 4-5k for a swap if I provide the motor. The only running 6.4 motors I can find are 5k plus with 125-175 miles. I’m in Maryland, and would love to find a shop closer that offers something similar to Choate (I see quite a few mentions on here). They said ~11k to put their reman engine with 5 year 100k warranty. Seems like a pretty good deal. Even if it means shipping the truck 800 miles. Any recommendations on something closer?

Did you ever figure out what the issue was causing the slow then almost no crank? I know it’s been awhile since you posted but having pretty much the same issue with a 6.4 that has sat for long time.
Old thread resurrected but go back to the basics. I've found that the ground lead on the driver side at the frame corrodes and you will lose contact with the second battery. That causes a slow crank. You cannot turn the engine by hand. I've had them on a engine stand and could not turne it by hand. Make darn sure all battery connections to engine and frame are good.
Thanks for the tip, Fefanatic. The guy who sold me the truck said it had a bad injector and slow crank. I took out the injectors and serpentine belt and it cranked normal so I am hoping its not something internal with the engine.
