Well...after getting new tires put on (which are much quieter than the old ones I took off), my exhaust drone has also made a return. I know it's not the intake that's droning cause I took the 6637 out and put the AIS in a couple of weeks ago. Now the drone isn't nearly as bad as it was when I was running straight pipe. I currently have just a 4 inch FTE resonator on right now that is 30 inches long. Anytime I go to accelerate rather quickly or go up a hill, I can hear it the drone pretty good. I just got back from a 2 hour trip to lynchburg va which has some decent rolling hills, and this is where I noticed the drone is back. So, I've decided I want to get rid of the drone once and for all.
All that being said, what's the best way to get rid of the drone?
Another resonator?
A muffler?
A catalytic converter?
Also, would the exhaust tip cause any kind of added drone or not really? It's a 5 inch tip that's around 12 inches long and has a rolled edge.
I don't remember what most used to stop this but some people just turned the resonator around and reinstalled it. But you could put a muffler in line to. Stock trucks have this drone with the window down. Never heard it with the windows up. Well back window down in the CC.
Yeah I'm kind of thinking a muffler might be the ticket. I figure if the stock exhaust had just a catalytic converter and a muffler, then a resonator and a muffler should kill most if not all drone. At least I hope so. I plan to pay a visit to my local exhaust shop tomorrow and see what they think.
if you don't have any un-dampened long sections of pipe, also check the hangers to see that they are actually doing something , ie. holding a little weight or tension
So I crawled around under there and found that there are 4 hangers. The only one that looked questionable was the one closest to the engine/front of truck. It has a little crack in the rubber, but looks fine other than that. Further back at the hanger that's in front of the rear axle, I saw an exhaust leak. Not sure if that could cause drone or not, but it can't hurt to fix it.
This/These year(s) of trucks did not have a catalytic converter that I know of.
It does look like you have some leakage at that one connection. My original muffler (still on) is blown out on the bottom, from the front to back of the muffler. Did make some 'leakage' noises when it first broke through, but 'softened' down with the larger hole.
that leak is minor and shouldn't be causing any issues related to drone. I see the exhaust appears to be stitch welded together in addition to the clamps which is good.
Your had absolutely no drone before the tire install? Seems odd this started after you installed tires. I was thinking they put it up on a lift and broke or knocked something loose. Did you go to a louder/larger tire? What cab configuration do you have? Sende a pic of the whole system looking front and back if you can? Is the tailpipe out past the fender?
where in your exhaust is the resonator placed? if its a crew cab your going to want it back close to original muffler around the back of the cab, you want to minimze the "whip" in the exhaust pipe"
Likely you can add a small straight through resonator, glasspack style muffler to stop the drone, but being you already have one that shouldn't be necessary.. You could go to something straight through with a resonator chamber in it like a 40" or 51" Donaldson muffler. But that is a last resort.
I got alot of practice with this building systems for the much more drone prone(lol) 5.9 and 6.7 dodge cummins trucks. I got to where i could build a straight pipe system with no drone. Or a system with a small muffler with no drone. Its all about making the system tight, muffle placement and getting the tail built right.
@riverrat41 Reps sent for bringing up an old memory for me to laugh at a bit...
Years ago when I was a teenager I spent more money than I should have on a big stereo for my car. My parents could hear me coming from a mile away (it seemed) playing Back in Black or Razor's Edge by AC/DC. My dad would meet me in the driveway and we would "discuss" the volume level.
Since I was a teenager, I knew everything... Now I drive without the radio or stereo on most times. If it is on, there is old country like Hank Jr., Merle, Waylon, etc... coming out of the speakers.
I did the same thing here in Texas.I did not have much money but I worked to buy the stereo, equilizer ,(dated myself) and Pioneer 6x9's
Now we have these Texas Singer Songwriters down here that have all this music stirred up we like......Damn virus has shut them down for now.
Sorry if I hacked
I believe it was Tugly that said he wrapped his exhaust with that heat shield wrap. Folded it in half and wrapped it around the down pipe and the exhaust. I think he said it made a big difference in quieting the exhaust. Ive been tempted to try just never got around to doing it.
