Hello, I have a 2017 Expedition with 55k miles on it. It randomly shudders where the RPMs flare and then the car vibrates. It first started happening only when going up hills but now it happens all of the time. Seems to only happen when the torque converter is locked (3rd gear or higher) and when under light throttle. Even just holding your speed will cause the RPMs to flare. I have replaced all of the sparkplugs with Motorcraft SP580 plugs. I checked the gap but it said not to adjust them for some reason (on the packaging) but they were all at .030 or so (I don't totally remember). Either way, it is still under powertrain warranty but I am not sure I want to take it in yet and pay the $125 diagnostic fee just to have them tell me its either something that isn't covered or they can't find the problem.
Just an update, I took it in to Ford and they said it was the torque converter and is covered under the powertrain warranty. Only issue is that the torque converter is back ordered for over a month.
Another update, they got the torque converter in and said that the piston in the trans was also bad. I am not familiar with transmissions, but I assume this is not in the bell housing and is actually in the transmission. Either way, this part is also under the powertrain warranty. Good news is I was going to change my fluid anyway so I am guessing they will have to do it for me now and cover it under warranty.
