Have and engine that has been sitting on a stand for a few years with the injectors out. Can I use fine emery cloth or will the injector brush core kit be enough to get rid of those light surface rust?
As a general rule of thumb, I start with the gentlest method of rust removal first and then slowly increase the level of abrasiveness until the job is done. I would be super careful on this one since bore size and circularity is critical to injector o-ring sealing. So yeah, start with the brush first.
I would pack something it the bottom of the bore to close of the injector tip hole, then I'd use some maroon ScotchBrite on an arbor chuck in a cordless drill. Should clean up rather quickly. Clean the bores...good.
You need to remember that there is an intersecting bore...and you will need to clean that as well. @Tugly used a rifle cleaning rod...through the end of the head....as I recall.
It might behoove you to take this time to do a cup job - maybe. You can get real aggressive with the cleaning, and you'll have cup sealant that works with ELC coolant.
That light surface rust at the top isn’t going to hurt as much as ANY kind of abrasive you put in there. You are almost certain to mess up with anything more than a fine scotchbrite pad.
Just wipe that out with an oiled rag and stab some injectors in there. If that ‘corrosion’ won’t catch a fingernail - it’s not going to compromise the sealing ability.
