I have some LED bulbs leftover from another project I had and decided to throw them in the truck (96 f250 Extended cab XLT). I swapped out the lights in the door then started working on the dome light. I like bright lights, its really handy in every situation, daily driver camping etc. So I took apart the dome line and added some wiring that will let all three interior lights come on when the door is openned. Quick and easy mod that I thought I'd share.
A couple notes if you decide to do this... Use LEDs since they have much less draw. There's a possibility of melting the wiring or cause a fire (unlikely... But I wouldn't risk it) if you use regular bulbs.
Once you do this, all three lights will come on when you switch either switch on the dome light. You'll need to rieplace the upexisting switches with SPDT switches to avoid that, I'm working on and I'll share details once i figure it out. It'll also change the wiring when I do that.
Also make sure you pull all the bulbs before you solder.
(My center light is not LED, yet)
The LEDs were a bit small so I soldered some caps from the old bulbs onto the LEDs to make them work.
On my 90, I couldn't find an LED bulb that fit so I bought a small plug with pigtail that fit a LED bulb, wired it to the existing wiring and fit it in the existing fixture. Works great. No more heating issues as you said.
