For those who use Apple CarPlay and who have updated to the newest version of iOS, I can confirm that when one is on the home / split screen of the Apple CarPlay interface, one can definitely use another navigation app on said split screen instead of being locked into only using Apple Maps.
I’ve been using a navigation app called Magic Earth for almost a year now and as of yesterday, this is the first and only navigation app that has adapted it’s app to be used on the CarPlay home screen. Magic Earth is totally free and believe it or not, it’s just as accurate as Google Maps, Waze, Apple Maps, and Sygic.
I’m sure Google and Waze will follow suit down the road but for right now, Magic Earth is the only one.
Ive never had a problem using Google Maps or Waze on CarPlay.
True, but you’re talking about using Google Maps or Waze on the entire screen, not on the split CarPlay home screen where three boxes are present and the larger box is for Apple Maps. That larger box used to be locked to Apple Maps “only” but with the latest iOS release, Apple has allowed other navigation apps to be used on said larger box.
One cannot use Google Maps or Waze on said larger box when in the split screen mode because neither Google or Waze has modified their respective navigation apps to be used in this mode but Magic Earth navigation has.
Google owns Waze, so I would assume that a lot of the technology underneath is the same. They both account for traffic data, but the sources are different (Waze gets it just from other Wavers, Google pulls from the larger community of Google Maps users). Don't know anything about Apple Maps.
