I am not a techy but I like the abilities that a lot of the high tech stuff gives you. I have had my truck (2012) for almost a year now and still don't really get what SYNC does for me or what it can do for me. I have the NAV and use it almost everywhere I go. I really depend on NAV in all my vehicles these days as I don't carry maps any more. I have SiriusXM with all the goodies and use the travel link feature often. I spent hours on the SYNC websites and am more confused than ever. An example of what I would like to do: I have and iphone 4S and would like to get text messages over my system in the truck. Is this possible? What apps are compatible with SYNC other than Pandora and the like. I don't use my phone as an ipod.
I use SYNC only for the phone. I'm out of the 'free' period of SYNC and will not pay $69 a year for a bunch of stuff that I don't use. I've only used the directions a couple of times while playing around with it. It got me very lost in Las Vegas a few years ago while looking for a business I was going to. Ended up digging out the fold up maps.

I use google maps voice navigation.. always updated. plays out thru the bluetooth connection.
So, make sure I understand what you just said. You use your phone or other device and the handsfree/bluetooth connection to get the verbal cues through your truck's system not the video screen?
I find the OEM NAV adequate for most things.
So, is SYNC no more than the handsfree/bluetooth component? If so what is the big deal with it?

My 250 only had sync, no nav. So I used Google maps over bluetooth.
I haven't tried the in truck nav, as I just got it with the 350 dually. I didn't like the nav in the panasonic I had in the 08.
well I DID until it took us thru downtown Chicago at 5pm while we were towing the trailer with my wife driving. ugly.
supposedly, the thing about sync is you can control ALL the functions via voice control. phone, music (radio etc), nav, apps, info (weather, traffic, ... some of these are not free)
edit:
as an example of app control. I just went out and started my Pandora internet music app.
connect with Service/mobile applications, say 'pandora', and I can now control the app with voice commands.
Sync is used to listen to music and podcasts on my phone and act as a bluetooth speakerphone.
I cant believe I can't set it on bluetooth audio and it start back up agaian automatically the next time I start the truck. I also can't believe the only easy way to get to bluetooth audio is through the voice command. I know there's a way to get to it through the menus eventually, but I've nearly worn the voice button out on my steering wheel. It makes it worse that when you first start the truck Sync acts like it's only half booted up or something,, won't recognized that you've said anything at first. Have to hit Voice again or sit through about 90 seconds of additional voice commands. So frustrating. I have the latest update through my Ford dealer, but even that didn't fix it. Fixed some old things but introduced new ones. And it still doesn't automatically go back to bluetooth audio mode like I left it when I turned the truck off last.
My BT audio starts right where I left it. As far as menus to get through to BT audio, all I have to do is select Entertainment and then select the down arrow under the sources (AM, FM, USB etc) and on the second list, select BT Audio. Three touches.

Now Apple may have changed their software since this resource was created, but let me know how it goes and I will see what other options there are if you don't have any luck.
It looks like those of us with recent Sync systems that aren't MyFordTouch systems are SOL. Accord to this, only a handful of phones out there have been tested to work with texts. I hope that's changing...

I use Robin(app) on my S4, and she can respond too. my son and I had a set of tasker (app) tasks that could auto respond. he set his to 'I am currently driving at ??mph, and I don't text and drive. I will get back to you when I stop". the task automation fills in the speed from the phone gps.
they speak and listen thru the bluetooth connection.
we had dualing phones one day.. he replied, mine replied etc..
