Fuel/vacuum issues

Hi there,
I have a 68 dump truck with a inline 6. I’ve run into a lot of issues trying to get this running. I have a bunch of vacuum lines that are not even being used, rotted fuel line, and after removing the carb to rebuild it I found missing linkage and the inside was beyond rebuilding. I ordered a aftermarket carb and trying to keep it basic for the connections since a lot of the vacuum lines were not even being used. I also have a couple of brackets, vacuum connections that I’m wondering if I even need them. The replacement carb does have an electric choke where the old carb had a manual choke adapted to it( jerry rigged ) The first picture is of something that has a lot of vacuum lines (which were not connected) it is between the intake and carb and the next 3 shows a fitting that was screwed into it and a big line that goes to picture 4. Not sure what this is for or if needed.

Next I have a bracket near the throttle cable end with a spring that is not connected to anything, not sure what it is or needed

The last picture is of an area on the new carb that on the old carb had a fitting that went down to the block. I believe it was some kind of heat supplied for the choke. The old carb was suppose to have been an electric choke but was rigged with a manual choke

Any info would be appreciated. I probably made it as clear as mud as to what I’m asking but I can try to explain each situation better as this post goes on. I’m just looking to have this as basic as it could be without all these vacuum lines ( which is not being used) and have it run when started. Thanks again.

It looks like you have a place for heater hoses to connect under the carb to keep the carb warm in cold weather. Or are these vacuum lines? Or a fuel line?

It appears you have a large vacuum line heading to an undercab hydrovac brake booster. Does the metal line go to such a booster?

It appears there is an EGR setup there, which might indicate a later model engine or manifold being installed. AFAIK there was no EGR in '68.

Does this thing start and run at all? If so, plug anything that's just pulling vacuum. See if you can assign any logic to hot water going under the carb and then on to the heater. Trace the vacuum source for the brakes.

Best I can do from this distance.

the top line goes to a vacuum on the distributor, the second line is connected to EGR setup and connects on the drivers side and goes down to a booster of some kind. The third line was connected to that fitting with the 5 connections and also goes to the drivers side. That fitting is screwed into the exhaust.

Yes it does

It does start but I can’t keep it running unless my foot is on the pedal. I have to replace the throttle cable as well because it binds up due to the outer shell is broken and has bare cable. I will try plugging any vacuum and see what happens.
I think I’m just going to have to do a lot more research and see what all I’m working with here. It appears I have a truck that’s been ”modified” with who knows what. For $300 bucks what else would I get. Thanks for your information

If that line is pulling vacuum, it's into the intake. Intake and exhaust are bolted together under the carb, only heat passes between the two.

If it was on the exhaust you'd have exhaust blowing all over and blowing out the booster.

The engine in your truck isn't the original, it's from a mid 70's to early 80's Ford pickup truck or possibly large car like a LTD.
The EGR system on your engine didn't come out until the mid 70's.
The top hose connected at the base of the carb should go to the PCV valve in the valve cover.

The large hose connected to the multi port fitting should be the one running down the the brake booster.
Plug off all of the other vacuum ports on that fitting.

The linkage your asking about is the kick down linkage for a automatic transmission that would be used in a pickup or large bodied car, they did not put the 300 six cylinder in small or mid size cars.
Leave it off.

Your new carb doesn't have a nipple for the stove choke used on early models that pulled heat from the exhaust manifold to warm the choke, that hole is probably blocked off inside, don't worry about it, the exhaust manifold won't leak exhaust there.
