I have a 2017 5.0. was looking at the super 10 muffler, and I know it is LOUD which I'm ok with. Read some other info on here including the flowmaster section in the exhaust thread. Just wanted to ask a few questions to anyone who has run it or is still running it.
1. Any ill effects from running the muffler ie. improper exhaust scavenging or back pressure causing issues with the engine?
2. I'd be running it on the stock piping, which I believe is 2.5" iirc. Not going to tune until my warranty is up, just going to run an S&B intake with the dry filter. Will the stock pipe size keep back pressure numbers closer to where they should be over going to a 3" pipe?
3. Keep resonator or delete it? Or resonating tip?
Noise is all you are going to gain. The drone in the cab will probably be worse. Try removing the resonator from the factory system first before you buy a muffler you’ll likely hate.
Next post is going to be " DTC Bank 1 , Bank 2 lean". In seriousness if you are going to change intake and exhaust you do risk causing a lean CEL due to MAP parameters. Remember the stock air filter supports 500hp easily and has been proven on the dyno. The cab drone is going to be intense in overdrive.
You likely won't have any issues changing out the muffler. Factory one is straight through design with minimal back pressure as it is. Had a borla s type on my last truck for the better portion of ownership with no issues or codes.
Can't speak to the intake. Never had a desire to change it since there are are minimal restrictions in airflow and it flows plenty of CFM. Plus the OEM paper filters are cheap to replace.
Know that you won't gain any power from either mod.
I'm considering adding a Borla XR-1 muffler to my current truck for a fraction of they cost of S-Type
Keep an eye on materials. Flowmaster is the budget exhaust for a reason. If you live in a salt/snow area you want T304 stainless. Most muffler shops also only work in aluminized steel so the section they weld in to make up any space won't be as quality as the stock system.
Thanks for the input everyone. Listened to a video of the resonator deleted on the truck and it actually sounds really good. I'll probably go this route, unbolt that whole pipe, cut out the resonator, weld in a pipe section to it, bolt it back up. Once the warranty is up I'll throw a five star tune in it, as for right now, I just want it to sound mean, it's a 5.0 after all. Anyone think I'll get DTCs by just deleting the resonator? I'll stick with stock intake.
Also, what is stock exhaust material? Would like to get the same steel to weld up.
So then what was the answer overall? Full cat back? New muffler? I have to leave cats as I'm in an area that requires e check.
You can certainly drop the resonator (or leave it in place) and do something like the 10 series to get the sound you want. It will be cheap (relatively speaking) and will likely drone and will not be quality materials.
There are many companies that offer a cat back solution that won't drone but get you the sound you're after. I would check out Borla, Corsa MBRP and Stainless works. They all offer sound options from mild to wild. If you want longevity, look for T304 stainless.
The solution depends on how deep your pockets are. You get what you pay for, looking at at least 1k for the above systems.
My son wanted the Super 10 on his 2011 5.0L. I warned him of the drone and the noise, but he said “let’s do it”. We did. Sounded great He called his truck Rice Krispies because of the snap, crackle, and pop. The drone in the cab was soon just annoying, but it sounded good. He was quite disappointed that my 2018 with resonator delete (the Corsa Extreme) has no drone, and was about 200% louder when in the go pedal than his. Of course, my wallet reflected the cost. No CEL with his, but stock cats were still in.
MBRP's T304ss systems are in the 1k price range as well. You're probably seeing Aluminized Steel or T409. Both have less corrosion resistance than T304.
If you don't live in the rust belt or see salt/brine this probably less of an issue. Exhaust gasses are corrosive too.
Not trying to push you into an expensive system - just the facts. I'm not spending that kind of coin this time around an am looking for an alternate solution.
Take a listen to this setup. This is a Borla XR-1 40085 with the factory resonator still in place. Muffler is around $140 and is T304ss. Muffler shop could weld in place easily and not for much $$.
Not sure if this will be loud enough for you though. I have heard drone is still there but minimal with this setup.
I can from a deleted 6.4 powerstroke, drone was daily and I got used to it. Also the MBRP I saw on summit was t304ss. It was side exit in front of rear tire for around 650. I might look into getting a muffler then seeing what a muffler shop could build me. Gonna have to make sure it's t304, I love in NE Ohio.
Those borlas don't sound too bad when you get in the go pedal, pretty quiet at idle from videos though. The borla atak sound clips sound nasty tho.
