Hey guys, I recently installed a new KC Turbo, truck was running great, drove about 150 mi then in the middle of a drive notice an interesting engine noise, not sure what missing should sound like, but I wanna say it might sound like the engine missing. kind of a faint shuttering in the exhaust, it is not turbo surge. Checked the codes when I got home, had thrown a P0640, Intake manifold heater, and a P0232, fuel pump relay. Have you guys ever experienced these symptoms? where should I start looking and what typically causes these two codes?
Thanks Sous for the above post, I will begin in these places. Do you think this could cause the truck to run weird at higher rpm? I do not notice any abnormal engine noise at idle.
Couple Questions:
What is KOEO? Key on engine off?
Where do I find the location of circuits and relays listed in the second post to test voltage and resistance across the terminals?
Regarding the "location of the circuits and relays listed in the second post", you will have to forgive my lengthy responses as I am still learning how to use the service manual. If you could give me specific procedure steps you are asking about and I will press on from there.
For example, let me know "KL9" or which one you are asking about and I will see what I can find.
Ok, I will take a look into that second, I'm not sure why the heater would even be tripped, I'm in AZ, the lowest temp we have seen in the past 4 months is 50 degrees. lately its been in the 70's. I think the Fuel pump relays sounds like it may be more crucial to proper performance. The other day I did get stuck in a wash down to the running boards, there was water flowing in the wash so maybe the fuel pump got splashed and shorted/kicked off the relay?
This is a diagram of the MIAH circuit. If it were me though, I would be focusing on the fuel issue as most of us have completely disconnected the MIAH.
Actually, first thing you should do is reset the DTC's and see if they come back... My fault for not suggesting this right off the bat.
if I reset them and it doesnt come back than I assume it is fixed? I have already cleared them, I will check again after starting the truck later, If the noise persists but no codes exist what would be the best way to diagnose the sound?
If you clear the DTC's and they do not come back, they may have been erroneous codes or they were stored from a previous event.
As far as the noise, when changing a major part of the truck like the turbo, there can be different sounds come up or that you notice. Any chance you can get a recording or video of the sound?
I will try and record the sound. I definitely noticed a sound change with the turbo, but it was in the middle of driving with my buddy in the truck that we noticed a different sound all of the sudden, its so faint you probably wont be able to hear it over the turbo. but it seems to make it only under throttle, not at idle. I will take a video and see if it comes out any good.
Figured out the sound... was under the truck working on locating a leak I've got going on and discovered the down pipe had come loose from the rest of the exhaust. re attached, now the truck sounds completely different, unfortunately lost the turbo whistle I had before and the "shuttering" engine noise is gone. almost makes me want to put a straight pipe on it! Codes didnt come back either, besides the disconnected ebv valve and manifold intake heater.
Good to hear sir! If turbo whistle is what you desire, the 6637 intake filter is known for screaming like a banshee with a stock or stock configuration turbo like the KC you just installed. Removing the foil on the driver side IC pipe is said to increase the noise level as well, but I didn't notice much of a difference when I did mine and was running a modified stock turbo.
