I would expect June or July. The plant is closed right now. Remaining 2020 orders have to be filled, then the plant has to shut for a couple of weeks to transition to 2021s. I would expect 2021 production to get pushed back some, then deliveries will be slow as there is so much inventory out there now that needs to be sold.
If you need a new truck now a 2020 is your best bet. If you have to have a 2021, see if you can negotiate an additional 6 months onto your lease.
I also would assume that the new parts to make the 2021s are idle now as well. I would guess mid-late fall before first ones roll to Dealers. If you need one now, I too suggest a 2020, and personally, if you can, I'd start shopping. I feel when this Virus bug passes and people get back to work, the good ones on Dealer lots will go quickly. Just my opinion, good luck
I posted this elsewhere, but interested in your opinions since this thread was already started.
It’s all conjecture because a lot is not known on the timing when Ford opens up again for production. And when they do, for what?
I want a Platinum 3.5 eco with no moonroof and a 6.5’ bed. ( and the bigger tow mirrors)
I figured this has got to be a special order.
So I am working very hard to pay off my ‘18 F350 6.7 and should have a lot of equity in it.
Payoff will be around mid August to September.
So I am ordering about mid July to end of July.
Will you still be able to order a 2020 then?
For conjecture, let’s assume that’s near the end of the 2020 order. If you were ordering and had your choice( because I could wait 2-3 months if necessary), would you order a 2020 or a 2021?
It looks like the 2020 is mostly a change inside( larger infotainment screen) and a change in the front grill. ( not sure if I like the looks on that one— maybe 2020 looks better to me?) Anything else catch your eye?
So what would be your choice 2020 or 2021?
( side story—I told a salesman at Mullinax I was going to have to order in the summer because I wanted a Platinum trim with no moonroof and a 6.5 bed. ( forgot to mention the Bigger tow mirrors). Shocked me a day later, he found the exact truck and color to the T, (except for the mirrors) in my state of Florida. Well the timing was wrong for me. In July/ August I might have taken it. I doubt that truck will be around then as well. .)
I have an 18 that's coming off lease soon, I still have 4 mos left but definitely want a 2021 no matter what. Just bored with this generation now, hence the reason I lease. I'm glad the 5.0 is staying around (atleast for 2021) I usually flip back and forth with it and the eco! Never missed either both are great in the 150 if you ask me!!
Larrymac52, why do you feel that it needs to be paid off before trading it in?
2021 looks like new front sheetmetal and new bedside sheet metal outside. A new dash inside, maybe new upholstery patterns. Same cab, frame suspension and drivetrains for the most part.
If I had to, I would trade in still owing.
But I like the fact that when it’s paid off, I don’t have to worry about trade in value I’m being offered , or the discount on the new car.
Its simply who can make that out the door price the smallest. I know that’s what we always want to do, but it eliminates the wasted negotiation time.
I’ve had a lot a friends tell me, they got a great trade in on their car. But how much discount was left out of their deal? And vice versa as well. I don’t worry about either in this case. I’m going to give 4-5 dealers this opportunity and who wins, gets my business.
I feel it’s different when doing a special order compared to car’s at different dealers. This is all apples to apples and you need to create the competition to get the best price. You don’t normally get the best discount on a special order compared to a car that’s been at the dealers 4-5 months. This is how I force the best deal for a special order.
JKBrad, what would be the car of your choice?
’20 or ‘21?
Look at the link I posted above. No much of a change after all. I would look for a deal on a 2020 myself.
As far as trade in. The value of you truck has nothing to do with any remaining balance. Say it’s worth $30k in trade and you owe $1,500. Then $28,500 will apply as your down payment on the new truck. Or you pay another 6 months, and $1500 until you trade. But now your truck is another model year older as 2021s hit the lots. So yours may be worth less then. Something to think about.

For me my situation is not as simple. But I understand what you are saying. Hopefully my truck may be worth less then, but at least not worthless. 🤣
Order banks for 2021 models were supposed to open May 11th and production was to begin August 17th but I suspect that it is anyone’s guess now. Other products are being delayed so F-150 may be as well.
