Brake pad info

2015 F250, CC 4X4 PSD.

Need to replace brake pads. At Rockauto and local parts store is showing OEM pad material is semi metallic. Is this true? Thought everything was ceramic on newer trucks. I was asking because thinking of trying some of the other offerings from Centric, Akebono or Reybestos. I have used Centric on other vehicles and they performed well.

I don't have a problem paying more for the Motorcraft pads if they are better, but are they? Will ceramics wear out the rotors faster??

semi metallic is the standard. Ceramics may wear the rotor more.

FYI Ford does make a heavy duty pad but I don't know the part number.

I bought the Power Stop full set of Evolution rotors and Z17 ceramic brake pads on Rock Auto. That was last June and they have about 15k miles on them now. With the ceramic pads, there's no dust at all on the front rotors. They were put on just shy of 43k miles. Front rotors started pulsing and they were corrosion pits on the front rotors and since I had the rears, my buddy replaced them as well because they had slight corrosion on the rears as well. I have hills where I'm at so if I get at least another 43k miles, I'll be happy.

I would consider the Motorcraft BRSD-1680, Powerstop Z36-1680, and EBC ED93015 for the front pads and Motorcraft BRSD-1691, Powerstop Z36-1691, and EBC ED93016 pads for the rear. Good Luck, Russ

This is the set I bought. I would have bought a better pad but because I was buying a set with rotors at a cheaper price, I didn't want the drilled and slotted rotors here in the rust belt. $339.00

But here's just the pads:

Z17 for $33.79 front https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...45244&jsn=2211

Z36 for $36.99 front https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...45244&jsn=2233

Z23 for $53.89 front https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...45244&jsn=2240

As to if they last longer or not, I have no idea.

Hmm, how would the power stop pads work on the factory rotors? My rotors are in excellent shape.

Searching around the forum, i found a thread in the F150 section where it was stated that the semi metallic pads have better stopping power but the ceramics have less dust. True?

The power stop Z36 pads will work fine with the Ford rotors, in fact I prefer the Ford rotors, but as a high friction pad rotor wear over time will be greater. Russ

Thank you sir! I guess if semi metallic is what came on the super duty OEM, ill just stick with it.

The factory pads have 70K miles on them, any brake dust on the rims has been minimal throughout the life of the pads.

I just replaced my rotors and pads recently. I was looking at all the aftermarkets brake set and reviews. I decided that since the OEM pads and rotors worked fine and lasted 60k miles, so I bought OEM rotors and pads again. I also replaced ps and brake fluid, and put on ss brake lines from crown. Firm pedal, no brake squeal and great braking.

Semi-metallic is what comes factory for high-temperature resistance. Ceramic is organic with 12-15% Potassium Titanate ceramic fiber in place of the steel fiber reinforcement, with higher organic content.

Rotor wear is not dependent on the friction coefficient of the pad. Cold braking is abrasive friction, but once warm, braking is cohesive friction between the pad and the transfer layer.

The terms "hard pad" and "soft pad" in terms of friction are irrelevant, you can have a friction material with good compliance but still high in friction, which is exactly what you want to avoid heat bands and hard spotting.
