Was plowing in November, noticed the truck felt like it took a second to engage into drive, figured I was spinning as I was in 2wd, clicked it into 4wd, felt fine, back up again, put it in D and same thing, felt like she was breaking traction, finished my push, backed up again, put it in D, no more drive. Just like that. No noises, no leak, no nothing, just there before I shifted to reverse, gone when I went back to drive the next time within 30 seconds. Don't have the cash to buy a trans or take it to a shop, didn't pay a lot for the truck so I'm willing to put work in to the trans if I can make the 4R worth it. A good friend of mine was a trans builder for a career, he said he would walk me through it. Just looking for a couple theories as to what might've let loose, reverse still works, drove home from the lot (2miles) in reverse with no issue or miss. I did replace the column shifter about two weeks before this but I'm for sure it was installed correct, they're a yearly occurance, just curious if something could've went out of whack with that either. Anyway sorry for the long winded explanation but any help is good help. Thanks again, any places with good rebuild kits at reasonable price are appreciated too, never know who to trust nowadays. It's 2000 reg cab 4x4
I see from your profile you are in NY. It may be worth a call to Vince’s or Gary’s u-pull it to see if they have a transmission. They are about $155 and usually the sticker on the vehicle states if trans/motor are good or not. Personally I have got transmissions, motors and other items and have always had good luck. May be worth a shot, tranny is pretty simple to take out, can’t beat the price and it has a 30 day warranty.
There is a snap ring on the forward clutch assembly that was prong to failure and is really the only weak point INSIDE the 4R100. If that snaps out of place,,,,,, nogoforward. I am no mechanic, but completely rebuilt my tranny last summer because the front seal started leaking. I used the kit from Transmissionbench.com. and also the Transgo shift kit. This kit comes with step by step classroom type instructions by Jimmy Williams on UBS drive. I called him direct with questions 3 times during rebuild and he answered twice and called me back the third. Heck of a guy. Since I saved money doing it myself I put the extra into a ATS triple clutch torque convertor. If you decide to rebuild it yourself, ORGANIZATION is the key factor.
