I've got an '87 F250 with the 460, carbureted. A while back, I had to replace the lifters and pushrods because of a sticky valve. Since then, it may have been going on previously and I hadn't noticed it, theres been a constant ticking noise from the area of the passenger side valve cover. I've checked and rechecked the torque on the pedestal bolts and have been keeping a very close eye on the oil level/pressure. One thing that I did discover by accidentally leaving the pcv out after I reinstalled the valve cover, is that the noise is only present when the pcv and vacuum line are in place. If I pull it out of the cover, or disconnect it from the carb, it goes away and the engine picks up a few more rpm's. I've searched everywhere that I can think of with no success, so I'm hoping someone on here has had a similar experience. Thanks in advance for your help!
Shake the PCV valve and you will notice that it rattles. There is a check vale in it which opens and closes to allow oil vapor from the crankcase to be introduced into the fresh air going to the carb. Some can produce a noticable ticking sound. Test it out and see if thats the noise you hear.
I checked it out and it doesn't sound quite the same. It sounds more rhythmic opposed to the clattery sound of the pcv. Another weird thing is that sometimes it seems like the intensity changes.
A mechanics stethoscope would be best but get a long screwdriver and put it up to your ear and probe around the valve cover flange to determine the area where the noise is coming from. You can do a quick search by listening to the top of the valve cover but I think there's to much echo. I have had new lifters get a little piece of debris in them during assembly which kept the valve lifter from pumping up all the way or it was intermittent while the debris moved around in the lifter. I have also taken the valve cover off to find a noise.
I'll definitely have to try that, won't be able to today though, we got a pretty good amount of snow and its supposed to rain all day. How much of a mess did taking the cover off make?
The oil is not being thrown all over under the valve cover but I've worked on quite a few vehicles and didn't really pay attention to
what kind of mess they made. Burned oil on the manifold was like perfume to me.
What will happen is the oil that doesn't drain back from the head to the oil pan will dribble down the side of the head onto the manifold.
A cotton towel can help to control the oil.
So I picked up a stethoscope, and I think it's an exhaust leak. Everything sounds normal and uniform when I probe the heads and around the plugs. Now I guess it's just a matter of finding a set of headers I like

I just installed a banks kit, with a universal catalytic converter on my 94 460, injected. They are pretty awesome. But, rather expensive. Still have a few bugs to work out, then I'll post a writeup. But, overall, fit was great, quality of parts was great, instructions quite simple, tech support was quite good. In your case, as in mine, i assume you have several broken exhaust manifold bolts.
