hey guys.
we have a couple engines at our farm that have been sitting for a whiile, and we have forgetton which ones where which.
how can i identify them?
both the 428 and 460 were factory 4 barrels. another way to tell a 460 is the head casting number is right above the 3rd combustion chamber on the drivers side, and 2nd on the passenger side- between the valve cover and the exhaust manifold. post the casting number if you want more info about the heads.
The easiest way is to look at the bell housing bolt pattern. 385s (429/460) have a rather square pattern with a flat top, whereas the old FEs were round.
Another quick way, if possible, is to look in the oil filler cap: FEs had a rockershaft, 385s didn't.
The head casting numbers on a 460 will be D1V, D2V (the worst) or D3V if made between '71 and the early '80s.
This will be true whether the engine was originally in a car or a truck.

actually in 1971 the head would be d0ve... there wasnt a d1ve head. d2ve heads suck because theyre detonation prone. d3ve's were from 1973-1987 and were fine for what they were- smog heads. the 1968 and 1969 engines had c8ve and c9ve heads respectively and were essentially the same head as the d0ve. the 2 high performance heads were the d0oe-r and the d2oe- scj and police interceptor heads respectively
Darrin, about '83 Ford went to an ExT number, indicating Truck division, in the '80s.
I am not sure of the exact date the D3V was dropped, as E3T heads are the earliest I have seen.
Is it possible that D3V heads were cast at the same time that ExT heads were cast, at different foundries?
I have original E6T heads on my 86 460. I have also seen E5T heads, and E7T heads (carbed) for the RVs.
I didn't know there were not any D1V heads, thanks for the correction.
As far as anyone has been able to tell me, the differences between the D3V and the ExT carbed heads is too small to make a difference. They can be used on any 460 block, or so I am told, which means a fuel injected block can be converted to carburation by using any carbed heads and intake.
The only real difference I can see is the location of the head casting number. On the ExT heads, the casting number is located on the underside of the head, just inside the lip that extends out over the intake valley. To see the number with the head on the engine, you have to remove the intake, and use a mirror to read them underneath.

yep... no fuctional difference in heads from 1973-1987 until they went to fuel injection. didnt know they changed the casting number location in 1983 though... i thought it was just 1986-87
