I've been calling around to see what people might charge in the area to do the job, and one shop 'recommended' that an alignment be done as well after the front shocks were replaced.

I had an alignment done earlier this year, probably about 6 months ago when I got new tires. (which I didn't tell them)

Is the alignment a good idea after doing the front shocks, or are they fishing?

Fishing. If there's nothing wrong with the alignment now, you don't need one. The shocks don't affect alignment. All they do is damp the action of the springs.
