That video is so syrupy I wanted to shoot my computer monitor. "Toppings Optional" Yeah ... no.
I'm from Iowa. We cook popcorn in bacon grease in a frying pan, drench in butter and salt ... as God intended. Lately I've become pretty fond of Fajita seasoning. Cayenne, onion powder, garlic powder is good too. (Maybe not all at once).

Atta boy!! If it won't stop your heart then why bother....lol
I'm not a huge popcorn eater either, but occasionally....
There for awhile I was in a cubicle at work near the break room. The break room vented right near my cube. Everyday this one idiot lady would burn her microwave popcorn and I'd have to choke through an afternoon of that odor....ugh
Bingo! There is hardly anything worse than a snootful of burnt microwave popcorn in the hallway. An Office Staple, I guess.
It is pretty convenient to make, but it isn't really very good. We used to just use an ordinary paper sack to make it in the microwave. Dad bought mom one of the first microwaves when they first came out. Litton Industries, iirc. Surplus military radar magnetrons or somesuch. No BS on those. "On" "Off" and a dial timer with a bell. I didn't even know what it was, I thought it was a TV.
I pretty much avoid corn & potato chips &c, popcorn is a great way to go when the salt&greasy snack food craving hits. About a million times cheaper too, all the very cheapest crap foods in the grocery are now the most expensive stuff you can buy. Go figure. Bacon grease is waaay healthier than whatever recycled axle grease is going into snack foods these days.
Right!?
I remember several times as a kid making popcorn in the bid deep cast iron skillet. Taking it off the burner and heading towards the table only to get a bout halfway and realizing that the skillet is pretty danged hot! Too far to go, too far to turn back........aaaaghh!
And, munching away on a batch of popcorn and biting down on an unpopped kernal. Popcorn is a horrible sneaky snack....LOL
I cannot even describe how much I hate popcorn . lol
You are a hero to your dentist!
I guess what made this popper so interesting to me is that I compared it to the little bags of microwave popcorn. They are expensive and full of salt and other tropical oils that are not very healthy.
The idea that you can get a full bowl of popped corn from only a 1/4 cup of good ole Orville Reddenbacher kernels is almost too good to be true. Pennies a bowl and no standing at the stove shuffling a pan/skillet back and forth over the burner...
We always bought the cheapest stuff we could find. Vinton (Iowa) brand, now defunct. Jolly Time was another. Can't really get any better than this. Popcorn is kind of a niche agricultural product, I don't know a whole lot about it, but it's my understanding it's kind of a PITA for farmers to grow, and there isn't a lot of incentive to do it.
Yellow popcorn varieties are actually used mostly for commercial pre-popped bagged popcorn sold in stores, one because it pops into big kernals, so they can use less, though mainly because it handles shipping and handling without busting up into dust. Because, it is so tough and dry. It has more hulls that tend to stick in yer teeth. This is the stuff that can be used for bubble wrap to protect fragile shipping items when mailing boxes.
Orville never got any love 'round these parts, the old coot. We tried it when it first hit the market, and everybody thought "Rip Off".
White hybrid variety popcorn, nothin' fancy, is sweeter, and easier on the teef. Smaller popped kernals, but way better.
Like I said, we just put it into a spare paper lunch sack and stuck it in the microwave. It's OK made this way, but nothing like oil popped corn. The key is that the corn is fresh, and a hot pan.
Not much better than popcorn in a iron skillet on a cold winter night, when I was growing up in rural North Dakota... actually after reading this thread I brought it up to Kim ... she said NO..
I'm pretty hooked on Costco brand (Kirkland) Movie Theater Butter..40 packages for $10 bucks
Kirkland is good but I have to drive to Kansas City to get. Charlie my wife bought the popper that looks like a pitcher. Melt cheese on it and pour away.
I love white cheddar popcorn and chips. So when I saw a small shaker of the stuff at the store, I bought it. Made popcorn that afternoon and sprinkled the stuff on it. UGH! 100% salt and very little cheese flavor. Threw it out, shaker too!
EBEAR,
What is WRONG with you, he asked sarcastically?
HA I was in a mall with my girls when they were quite small when we came to a vendor selling popcorn flavoring . Of course the girls did a bee line to her " she had samples " . She asked me what flavor I liked and I told her I didn't like popcorn . She immediately said , there are lots of flavors you must like one to which I again told her " I don't like popcorn . I really wish that I had a camera because the absolutely baffled look on her face was priceless .
