'76 300... Which Carb?

Just finished swapping out the burnt 300 in my 76 F250 and putting in a new used motor, and I'm going to replace the carb. But, the carb on there isn't the OE model.

When I went to buy a rebuild kit a couple years back, took a bit of digging to find that the carb on the truck is actually a mid-60's era Holley 1940 carb, which I believe was used in vehicles with the 170 or 200 CID straight six.

Compared to what I think the truck is supposed to have, a Carter YF. The main thing I'm trying to figure out, is do I get another Holley to replace what I have, or switch to the carter? If I'm getting a reman I might not be able to send in a core for the carb that isn't what I'm buying.... But I worry that the Holley might be undersized for the motor.

Thoughts?

As a general principle "undersized" when talking about a carburetor might have some utility in drag racing. It doesn't really apply to most people who are rattling around in a pickup truck taking a load of mulch home or whatever. You'll never notice any difference except in the top end. In fact if the truck is actually used to haul loads, a bit "undersized" is probably what you want. That's what the engineers figured out.

What you want to make sure of is avoiding weirdo adapters and/or a mismatched intake carb combo. The carb doesn't really feed the engine with fuel, the manifold does, and the two make a tuned pair so they have to be matched together.

Ya the 1940 holley was specifically made for Ford, and was the factory service replacement for the 1100 Autolite used on 170 and 200 I6s.

The 1940 Holley is a 120CFM carb, and that is way undersized for the 300 I6, If you are never planning on going faster than say 25 or 30MPH it probably won't matter too much. But otherwise, it will be choking the engine.

The correct carb for your engine is the Carter YF/YFA (the YFA is the emissions version of the YF) and they are 190-200 CFM and really are still undersized for the 300 I6, but they do the job.

If you are going replace the carb source an earlier Carter YF they are better than the YFA.
