7.3 surging stalling no start.
I have a 2000 7.3 that I picked up knowing it had a few issues. Truck ran great for first 3 months and then all of a sudden started having issues.
It it started out with a small miss and would rev up when sitting in park randomly. Then one day the battery light came on while driving and since then it’s been a nightmare. I checked the batteries and both are in great condition. 750 cca. I have a good connection on both but the light stays on. Voltages stay right at 14v. But after that came on it started surging going down the road and would stall at lights or if I let my foot off throttle. It would throw camshaft sensor code so I replaced the cam sensor and it was fine for about 30 minutes then same problem. So now I’ve replaced 3 and the problem only gets worse. Took it to the shop and he went through the harness and replaced icp and new pigtail. I replaced injectors and uvch hoping it was something there and no luck. New fuel filter and oil change still no help. Yesterday I put a new pcm in it thinking that’s the only thing left. Once we put it in and turned the key to on the battery light came right on and stayed on and after starting it the light still is on. I decided to try and drive it anyways and made it 5 miles and it shut off. Cranks and fires up and dies. Hooked it to the computer and it can not communicate with any modules now at all. We are completely stumped. Please any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
That was the first error.
What diagnostics were performed and what problem was found to bring you to the decision to replace the PCM?
Any reason why you're not suspecting that the alternator is bad? Installing a remanufactured alternator should be avoided as in many instances they are bad right from the box. I've seen 4 different remans installed to find a working unit, all purchased at Autozone.
PS- no aftermarket camshaft phasers (aka cam solenoids).
