Dang! Yes, can`t blame anyone. Put the engine together. Thought the retainer on the oilpump shaft was a little tired and "loose". Well, assembled it anyway. When I would fire it up today, it would not. Cranked it a few times, but didn`t get fuel to carburetor. Then I thougt it would be a good idea to run the oilpump a little before cranking more. Pulled the distributor, and the oilpump shaft came out with it. Without the retainer wich is supposed to keep the shaft in the pump. So I guess I have to pull the oilpan and hope to find that little **** :-(
Had the same thing happen to mine. Stuck a magnet to the pan and rtv'd the shaft into the distributor. Motor comes back out in the coming weeks for an intake and valve cover reseal. Ill get that clip out and replace the old shaft with a new one.
Put a strong magnet on the pan near the drain, next oil drain, use a screen, between the two you may find the clip. If the clip don't come out in oil, then after drain, pull the magnet off the pan and insert a small magnet wand in the area.
