oil pump shaft?

The oil pump intermediate shaft on my old 302 came part way out and fell back in as I pulled my distributor. Fortunately, it fell back where it should, but is sitting in there cockeyed. I can wiggle it around with a screwdriver, but it won't fall down into the pump proper. This ever happen to anyone? What did you do about it. Thanks

Get a pencil magnet or mechanical fingers and stick down in the hole to pull the shaft partway back out...then re-align to lower back into the pump. Both the pencil magnet and mechanical fingers, both of which use a flexible wire-wrapped shaft, can usually be purchased at your friendly auto-parts store. I may have the correct name of the tools wrong but the counterman should know what your looking for when you explain the situation. Deen

Thanks for the tips. It turned out to be just one of those frustrating things that you run across sometimes. I pulled the shaft out of another distributor and was able to use that with a big magnet to get it out. Then I jammed heavy grease in the end of the distributor I used, and that held the shaft long enough to get it in.
I noticed that if the shaft had fallen back in with just a slight angle to it, it would have fallen into the engine proper!! Luck was with me! Thanks again.
