The one thing that sucks is that there aren't many tool box manufactureres that make a narrower box for stepsides, they look kinda dorky hanging over the edge like that.
I agree with an earlier post, the Stepsides look cool on older trucks, but goofy on newer ones. A new truck with a nice aero front end...followed by a stepside bed and taillights sticking out the sides. Imagine a 40s truck with a styleside bed...that would look equally goofy. Some of the 60s and 70s trucks looked good either way though. My brother in law owned (at different times) a C-10 stepside (which got stolen out of his carport after he was done customizing it!!) and replaced it with a styleside (and moved out of that neighborhood).
I like the stepside on my Ranger. I don't know the percent of stepsides for Rangers but it must be low. It just makes it standout. Now on a 70's, a stepside makes it look like an old farmer's truck.
The old truck were designed for use with a stepside. The foot platform was low enough to actuallt be useful. The news are all for looks. Function before style, with function comes style.
Well, I guess it goes without saying that I respectfully disagree.
Granted, if the truck has 24" of lift that step is not going to be easy to get up on. But I can tell you for certain that as late as the 98 Ranger step side, the steps were 100% functional. I go well over 200 pounds and it holds me and whatever I am strong enough to pick up without protest (or flex).
I haul sea kayaks, mountain bikes, and a metric butt-load of camping gear on a very regular basis and I just love my stepside. . . besides, it's not ~average~ looking like the slab sides - you see them everywhere
Mike.

i haven't seen too many step side like mine. in fact in my area i have never seen one from the 70's around here. see a few of the newer ones around. but i always like being a little different.
The new 2004 looks awsome I saw about 4 up close today. (stopped at the dealer on the way home) all the ones on the lot were the new styleside talk about sharp. They need steps though to get over the bed rails.
