I have a 1997 F150 4x2 pickup, motor blew a plug and my father had helped me to do a rebuild and in the process we found alot of wires cut and parts omitted. I had an issue with the wiring harness in the cab and had to replace it.. I ended up replacing it with a 1999 Harness and Cluster, was all I could find that was intact in the junkyard, everything in the cab except the ECM was replaced. I replaced the GEM Module as well, The truck will start and runs great. My biggest problem I now have is that the speedo, tach, and Temp gauges won't show a reading. Also, the oil light remains on. I tried the test mode on the cluster gauge and everything moves as described by others. I've tried searching posts and other information regarding the issue but have not found anything that was helpful. Would anyone know a way to get this issue fixed without chopping the harness to bits, so I can at least see how fast I am going and ensure the proper temperature so not to wind up overheating the motor?
You replaced a ‘97 model cluster with a ‘99 version?
Well, that’s a problem. Only 97-98 analog odometer clusters work in your case. I’m surprised that wasn’t checked for interchangeability before you undertook this operation at the yard.
Maybe someone will chime in with wiring schematics, but I’m not even sure you can plug a ‘97 cluster into that 99 harness and have it work. The connectors could be different for all I know and you’re going possibly have to find a 97-98 dash harness now or perform some surgery (as wires are wires and generally are obedient) and swap connectors and repin as needed.
One other thing. The 99-03 clusters are looking for a PATS signal. Your 97 wasn’t equipped with that setup, so it will start fine. Gauge cluster operation? No see signal from chipped key = no operation.
we completely rewired the dash using a 99 harness .. everything else connected except for the cluster so we just swapped the clusters. the old harness was beyond repair.. whoever the prior owner was bypassed the GEM Module and added in some Relays that are not even for a Ford, but as stated ..everything is running well .. windows up and down.. radio works. locks all work, lights all work.. the only issue is the cluster.. I was thinking maybe an issue with the sensors, but I am no expert.
