Hi All,
I have a question that I’m sure will get a few different opinions, but I thought I’d open this up for discussion to help me better understand the thought process.
After purchasing an ‘18 Coyote and MT-82 manual transmission package I’m finding that the stock MT82 is going to be too long. The shifter location is basically under the bench seat. I’m looking into the Tremec TKO 600 and the T56 Magnum, which both provide modified shifting locations of at least 8 inches closer to the firewall for clearance.
TKO 600: 2.87 1st with either .82 or .64 5th.
T56 Magnum: 2.66 1st with .63 6th; or 2.97 1st with .5 5th.
I will be doing normal daily driving and have a 3.50 rear end with 28” tall tires. Is there an easy formula to determine which transmission gear set will be best suited? The stock MT-82 3.24, 2.10, 1.42, 1, .81, and .62 with 3.73 rear end and 26” tires.
I’m not having much luck finding a clear calculation on how to determine what’s best and know there is a breadth of knowledge here.
I would start by researching your engine and it's operating hp-torque @ ? rpm . If you don't know the rear end ratio and tire size of the donor vehicle you should be able to search it . I'm guessing your donor is a mustang not a truck so I would want the engine running faster as your truck is definitely not as slippery and fuel mileage is less of a concern . .82 @ 60 mph is 2066 rpm and .64 @ 60 mph is 1613 rpm .
Ha I guess I should have read all of your post more carefully lol . Stock set up would be running 1793 @ 60 mph .
When I was building my 67 XL I ran into the same problem with the T45. I extended the shift handle about 7” forward by bolting a piece of 3/8th” X 2” flat stock to the transmission shift lever and with a Hurst straight handle bolted to the flat stock it works perfect.
You will only be running 1566 rpm @ 60 mph with your 3.50 gears in 6th but changing rear gears is definitely cheaper than buying another trans . What rear end are you using ?
This car was originally an automatic, with the extension from the shift stalk i was able to have the lever come out where the auto shift was.
I have 3.70 gears which averages 2100 @ 70 in 5th over
Kenny, appreciate the picture. This week has been crazy at work with everything closing down so I haven’t had a chance to map out an extension yet, but I really like that idea. Thank you.
Ebear- I have a brand new Currie 9” with 3.50s. I’d prefer to leave that at the moment. Once I fully understand how the variables interact I plan to map out all my options from there.
The one thing I had trouble with was the steel extension that bolted to the transmission shift stalk that kept working itself loose. I finally cured the problem by countersinking the steel extension mounting holes and using some grade 8 bolts.
That trans does have a very low first so that shouldn't be a noticeable issue and 5th will be a nice cruising speed but I doubt that you will find many places to utilize 6th . If it were me and the shifter issue can be fixed I would defintely use the trans you have , drive it and in a worst case scenario change the rear gears which with a 9" is a fairly simple task .
