No temp. gauge
I'm having trouble getting my temp gauge to work on my 73' F100. The gauge itself works, I grounded the wire and it went to hot. The original sending unit no longer varies in resistance on the multimeter. I bought a new one from Advanced Auto but it doesn't seem to work either. The new one does vary in resistance when I heat the unit up but it does no change the gauge. I don't know what else to try. Thanks in advance.

I always have someone watch while I put 12v to the sender wire momentarily. it should jump all the way up. just bump it don't hold it there. your method should work too I've just never done it.
I did one time have a new sending unit fail to work because the Teflon insulated the ground. I doubt that happens very often though the threads should cut through.

If you have access to you meter now, measure for continuity from the body of the sender to the - post of the battery. If you don’t have continuity or you do but the resistance is kinda high, try a ground from a bolt on the intake to the frame or firewall. Crusty old bolts, thick gaskets and lots of silicone can cause issues as will Teflon tape or pipe dope on the sending unit.
