Stuck steering wheel

I'm wanting to work on the turn signals on my '64 F250, 2wd and the wheel on't budge. Currently have a puller on it under tension and penetrating oil sprayed on it. Anyone have any tricks for getting a stuck steering wheel off the shaft.
Thanks. John

Hit the head of the tensioning bolt (tightened against the shaft) with a hammer. The impact should pop it off.

you're pretty much using the 'trick' I've used in that case. one took a day or two to pop off, but it finally did. I just kept it oiled and made sure the puller was good and tight and off it came.

turned out the PO had goofed up the splines by just impacting on the nut. hope yours isnt that. ruined the wheel in that case

I may dig out a heat gun too. I had to use an impact to get the retaining nut off. It acted like it was cross threaded. I just noticed that I have a 1/4"+ gap between the wheel and the outer column too. My cab mounts are good so I'm hoping to get that closed up too if a PO didn't screw something up..

Removed wheel on both 65's on a number of occasions and found this type of puller works best for me, does require a short extension and depending how stubborn may require a breaker bar?

Dave you need to remove the nut first. I use the same puller but, after tightening it all up sit in the cab and use your knees a 4 and 8 o'clock and hand at 12 get some pressure pulling toward you and tap on the shaft. Works for me every time.

You are right, not sure why I would have posted pic other than use as an example. For 1 reason or another I have removed the steering wheel so often it has not sit on the steering shaft long enough to seize. After removing the nut, tighten the 2 bolts equally, in the worst-case scenario I use a short breaker bar along with the shot extension and socket.

John, not familiar with the 64 steering components, on my 65 it requires 2 horn brushes, 1 of which has to be installed with the steering wheel removed; if the case, strongly suggest replacing brushes during reassembly.

I have a similar puller on it right now. I think they are similar on top but the '64 has a solid shaft. No rag joint. I have the nut on the shaft in case I damage the threads. I still have play for the wheel to start up but it is really stuck.

have you gave the head of the bolt that’s tightened against the shaft a good smack with a hammer like Christmas and I suggested? Works every time. I’d take the nut all the way off first...no need for it. The shock from the hit on the bolt while the steering wheel is in tension is what breaks it loose. It’ll just pop off.

More heat, Bigger hammer. If it breaks it was weak and due for replacement anyway.

As best as I can describe if the puller, where the force is being applied to the center of the column shaft, I found a heavy-duty air impact gun will pop the wheel off in a nanosecond; however the shaft may need to be replaced.
