I recently got my 76 f-150 4x4 on the road and so far things are working well except for severe vibration at 65 and above. The vibration starts faintly at 60 or so then gets very violent as the speed increases then tapers off as I go over 75.
The truck as the New process 4-speed in it. I replaced all the u-joints when I put the truck together but I did not get around to changing the tranny mount and I have not replaced any of the bushings.
I can't tell where the vibration is coming from cause everything under me is rattleing when it starts acting up. Putting the clutch in and taking it out of gear does not change the vibration.....other than letting the truck slow down ..out of the 65 mph range.
Does this seem more like a suspension/tires thing or a drivshaft/tranny problem?
Make sure your tires are properly balanced, that would be what I would try first. Also when you changed the U-joints did you align them back up correctly. I know I didnt line mine up just right and I had a nasty vibration too. Also it might just be in the driveshaft, do you have a two piece or one piece? Goodluck
A vibration that comes and goes at a certain speed is most always a out of balance tire. Take it to a good tire shop, with a test drive they should be able to tell which wheel is most likely the culprit. Should cost about $5-$7 a tire to rebalance.
Is this the same truck with the 4th gear problem? Does it make noise in forth gear. Also, is the shake a whole truck shake (feel it in the steering too), or does the truck shake, but the truck drives/handles fine?
4th gear is nice and quiet. it is just the ocasional grinding when I shift while it is still cold. maybe I sould drain the oil out and put a lighter oli in for winter.
it seems like the whole truck shakes, it doesn't wander or anything but just goes into resonance and shakes like crazy. so it still handels fine but it is really annoying/scary.
the lighter gear oil fixed the tranny problem and the vibration is almost gone, I can still faintly feel it now. It isn't a mojor concern but I may get my tires spin balanced this weekend to be safe.
I have a 48 f-1 parts truck that I don't need. it has a 52 front clip, no bed, a buick v6, jeep 4x4 axles, t-case, and tranny. it also has a cracked frame.........I highly doubt it is worth your effort haul back unless you plan on making a rod or use the body on a new truck frame.
Understandable, I really, really really want a 48-50 F-1. But I would preferably like to keep it all stock. That is by far my most favorite bodystyle. Before I die, I want one of those and a 48 Merc. Highstandards!!!
Jp, just double check your mounts too. All that vibrating could easily loosen them some, especially if ya got some fluid down there (like most of us do, lmao). Make sure everything is back to torque specs.
Well the vibration is still there after all. I have been driving on some highways laitly (normally I only have to drive on backroads) it still vibrates at speeds above about 62 mph.
I tried rotating the slip joint 180 degrees and it made little diffference.
I also tried putting on a different driveshaft (that has a badly worn slipjoint) the vibration seemd to be less but it was still there.
I put the other one back on (the tight one) cause I don't trust the loose one.
does anyone near me have a known good driveshaft that I could try?
I will be putting new tires on the truck next week so hopefully one of two posible good outcomes will happen...
1) that the vibration will go away with new tires ( I am taking off the general 31X10.5's and am putting on BF goodritch 33X9.5's
2) the increase in tire diameter will push the vibration up to 70+ MPH
