Do I have a 302w?

I drive a 89 bronco XLT and I pride myself in knowing what i’m driving yknow?

it’s a 5 liter 302 with the AOD trans

Im not sure if it’s the 302w, 302c, or if it’s the 5 liter the mustangs got

Also is the mustang 302 just a 302w with different heads and intake?

It's a 302 simple as that and yes they were made in the Windsor engine plant. There is no such thing as a 302w or 302c. A 302 truck engine shares basic architecture with the car engine.

Up until this generation the only engine families to get EFI were the Windsor platform and 385 series, so yes your truck has a 302w. The mustang 5.0 was the same basic motor but it had some different internal parts(cam and pistons) and wore a different intake, heads are the same though.

302 can be referred to as 302W but it is not.
It is simply "302". You might differentiate the Mustang 302 from "other" 302's by calling it a "302 H.O. (high output)".

When talking about a 351 however, it is proper to distinguish it by calling it a 351C or 351W or 351M.

There is a 302C, but it was only sold in Australia. That's were the 2V closed chambered aussie heads come from.

Not all Mustang 302/ 5.0L engines were “High Output” so that isn’t entirely true either.

US/Canada: No such thing as a 302W, it's just plain 'ol 302.

There were 351C's, 351M's and 351W's, but that's it!

Well, with that clarified, if the shifter stalk is the original one and has a push button, your truck is equipped with an E4OD auto trans (you can also get under the truck and count 22 bolts on the pan, AOD should have like 14?). Your transfer case should be a Borg Warner BW1356.

On an ‘89 the OD cancel switch will be on the dash to the right of the steering column.

E4OD only

i dont think a 89 302 had the e40d just the 351. should be that way 86-90. 91 is when they all had e40ds. i could be wrong but ive never seen it. these are the od autos. looks like 90 was the first year for e40d even. however seems like some late build 89s had it.

Yep, 89 is the initial year for the E4OD, even if it wasn't the default auto trans then.

No E150, F150 or Bronco had E4OD in 1989. Only E250/350 & F250/350 351W/460/7.3L diesel.
