Got a 97 F250 with a 5.4 l and an e4od transmission I recently discovered that the transmission dipstick is about a foot longer than it should be. Any body got a matching truck that can run out and measure the dipstick for me??
any help is much appreciated
It's the new body style 97. I've come to realize this is kind of the red headed ******* child.

I wonder if this transmission is maybe a replacement? It's got 20 bolts holding the pan on from what I could tell that meant that it was e4od
how do I tell?
Can I safely assume it's going to be the same length as the trans dipstick for my brother's 99 F-150 with a 4.6 L?? I would think it would be at least closer than the 43 inch transmission dipstick that is currently in here.

NO. The 4.6 was never offered with a 4R100. What part number is stamped on your dipstick?
It's an e4od I looked it up. I posted the number the first time you asked. I don't think it really matters, it's four feet long! it's not the right one.
A 1997 would have an E4OD. The 4R100 started with the 1999 Superduty.
The F250LD was definitely a weird one back then. It was the attempt to cover the gap for the 1999 SuperDuty launch. The 7 lug wheels still haunt me 20+ years later after working on hundreds of our fleet trucks. Not to mention the bizarre 10.50 semi floating axle that couldn't keep the bearings from failing.

The number you posted is a 4R100 dipstick which is correct for a 5.4 4x4 application. Not sure what you looked up to verify it's a E40D as the 4R100 uses the exact same transmission pan.

I went by the number that's written on the vehicle for identification. I typed it in and all the vehicle specs for this whole thing popped up and a link to download the owners manual. Which was next to worthless because it was the old body style owners manual had to download the 98 owners manual also to cover this whole truck.

now having said all that I did too also notice that the transmission is incredibly good shape for its surroundings. I don't know how to identify the transmission just by looking at it it could very easily be the one you're talking about. That's why I'm here, to learn

update.. we were both right.. the dipstk was correct AND its an e4OD. More importantly, it had almost 1.5 gallons to much fluid... i never imagined the people i got t from would have been that inept! Sheesh. I should have guessed though. They had the 4x4 vac. Lines tucked into the radiator. And the wireing in the dash is/was totaly scrambled
