Fuel Filter Compatibility

Hi guys,

I am new to the world of diesel and recently picked up a 1994 f250 4x4 Turbo IDI 7.3L (my internet research leads me to beleive this is a "K VIN"). I have been shopping around for a fuel filter and water in fuel sensor and I came across a couple things that I am unsure of (maybe due to this year being a transition year?).

1) WIX33617 fuel filter seems to come up as not compatible with my truck, however it seems to be interchangeable with some filters that are compatible with my truck. I can only assume that it is compatible with my truck and this is a cataloging issue with the parts vendors I am shopping around with?

2) the thread specs for the water sensor port for the WIX33617 filter is listed as 7/16-20 while the thread specs for some sensors I have seen are NPT 7/16x1.3. Am I correct in assuming that these parts are compatible with each other and that the difference in specification is some sort of standard to metric level of confusion?

The factory WIF sensor doesn't even work reliably so it's often deleted. The six filter number is compatible with your truck and the factory sensor. Lots of us use the 33417 filter which eliminates the sensor.

what filter is on the truck now ? does is have the cast metal Bowl ?

the Raycor is a good filter to use in conjunction with a 20 micron Pre Filter.
https://oregonfuelinjection.com/shop...lter-7-3l-idi/ <<=== this fits OEM
same as wix 33217
^^^^^^ the Wix however is not 2 Micron

Thanks for the replies. Right now it has a 2 peice filter in place. No WIF sensor. I was looking to go to a one peice filter for simplicity as alot of people complain about fuel leaks from the lower bowl.

Ahh so someone has plugged the WIF sensor hole... I got ya....

as far as the WIF not working well, that is Generally the Fault of the WIF Module and not the sensor as the sensor is just a metal rod in some plastic

Personally I have never had issues with the bottom bowl leaking... it's the filter head where the heater connector is that I have seen most leaks on.

You can get the 33617 with the WIF sensor or you can get the sensor separate Int'l PN 1823586C91
Be Warner that little plastic Plug is expensive LMAO

Haha I was just looking at some aftermarket sensors and for a little bit of plastic and metal I'm impressed at what vendors are asking for it

Lonewolf, what is the proper way to test the WIF module? I took the 90 degree connector off the WIF sensor and put it to a ground, which illuminated the Water in Fuel light in the dash. Providing the sensor in the filter base is good, that means everything checks out, right? Pardon the hijack BigRed

No problem at all. The right angle boot has been cut or ripped off of the wire for me by a previous owner so that's how I tested the circuit the other day to confirm it was functional.

I used a jumper and grounded the sensor wire which caused the WIF light to illuminate

jumpering the sensor wire to ground is as good a way as any to test it.

here is schematic....

The Red/yellow wire eventually ends up at fuse 17 .... as you can see the WIF module is just an SSR, Diesel is generally non-conductive and so is pure water but Water in fuel has many Impurities making it conductive enough to trigger the Solid State Relay and turn the light on .... probably a better way to test is using a variable resistor to ground .....Unfortunately I do not know what the Resistance Specs should be to cause the SSR to trigger..... it would be an easy enough experiment to figure this out Providing the WIF module you test is within Spec... IF that makes any sense

EDIT: also NOTE: when pin 1 on the display module is taken to Ground by the IGNition switch in the start position Those Lamps should light up this is the Lamp Test Mode.

Oh BTW If you think they are proud of the WIF sensor ..... just hope you don't need the module

Yikes. All I can think about is the conversion to Canadian dollars $$$. Sadly it's probably more economical for a guy to buy it from the U.S. and ship it to Canada then it is to purchase locally. It has been that way for quite a few of my auto parts purchases as long as the weight wasn't too heavy.

You're right about the transitional year, '94. If you want the stock filter, ask for one for an '89 to '92. Turboed version took the same filter as non-turboed. Bought my pickup new over 25 years ago and never had trouble with the factory filter lower bowl gasket leaking or the WIF system. Can't remember complaints on IDI forums through the years either. Worst was guys trying to figure out which way to unscrew it since it's mounted upside down. A right hand thread is a right hand thread.
