Ok. I have 1 last part to purchase. Rear bumper. Its the contoured bumper. Lmc offers 2. One says 37.5 mount holes the other says 40. Where are they measuring from. The bumper bolts on top of the bumper? Or what?
i have my old beat up bumper contoured bumper. But i still dont know where they are measureing from.
The high boys were the narrow frame . all models mid '77 up are the wide frame. if someone doesn't know I can go measure some bolt holes but I assume they mean between the main mount holes.
When you say main mount holes? Where it mounts to the frame? Or where the bumper mounts to the brackets. Weird thing. In my current bumber the set of bumper bolts are 40 inches center to center. But the frame rails are closer to 37.5. Ive already got the brackets on. Just need the bumper itself.

You have TWO threads on the same topic, see your other thread.

Hi DDB1973 - I have exactly the same question about the rear bumper from LMC truck, so just wondering if you ever confirmed which bumper is the correct one to order ('center mount holes 36-1/2" apart' or 'center mount holes 40" apart')?
My truck (1973 F100 Styleside SWB 2WD) is missing the rear bumper and brackets altogether. My frame rails are 37.5" apart, but from the look of the brackets in diagrams online, I'm guessing the center bolt holes in the bumper are spaced further apart than the frame rail.
I'm ordering from Australia so really need to order the right one as shipping is expensive. Thanks for letting me know if you worked out the answer.
The 1st question I want to ask is did you locate the mount brackets? Those are normally VERY hard to locate. Ok now I see what LMC is doing to remedy that issue.
"40-3705 Rear Bumper Bracket Set is patterned after the OEM brackets used for 1967-1972 pickups but these brackets will also work to install the same style rear bumper to 1973-1979 trucks by drilling one additional hole on each rear frame rail."
And it looks like the 40" apart ones are TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK NO BACKORDERS.
Best of luck with getting that thing shipped way over there and then quality be worth what it cost you for the bumper + shipping. I have not heard the best user opinions on their bumper/chrome quality. Better have a plan to paint/coat/seal the back side of it for sure.
I just went and measured the frame this bumper below came off of. Outside to outside it 37 1/2.

Your brackets mount on the outer-side of the frame rails do they not? Be more difficult to measure the bolt holes in the frame side to side I think as they are selling bumpers there, not brackets or frames.
I have my rear bumper off at present, but left the brackets on. I painted the brackets red and added a cross bar just to draw attention so that a person is less likely to walk into them unseen. These brackets were holding up a chrome bumper once, I simply reused them with my DIY bumper.
Thanks tbear853 & 77&79F250 - that's all really helpful. It's clearly the 'center holes 40" apart' that I need, and yes stock of the 40" version seems to be an issue at LMC truck as well other retailers. I was planning to get those bracket sets from LMC truck as well. There's a couple of importers in Australia for F100 parts, but they've had no stock of bumpers or brackets for 12 mths (hence why I've started looking in the USA). I appreciate the advice re quality 77&79F250 - that's been an issue with past stock through Australian importers also.
At least I know what I'm looking for now so thanks for the help.
how do the mounts work on the step bumpers? I have mine rigged on, mounts on bumper are welded for narrow frame, I put some 2x4s on for spacers gets it on but isn’t accurate or functional.
I believe the mounts for the contour bumper are different than the step bumper.
They are ... if using a mass produced step bumper, or Ford's, they always came with mounts AFAIK.
I made mine, i just welded two 1/4" plates in my bumper that are "out to out" 37-1/2" ... same as contour bumper mounts "in to in" so then just mount with three good 1/2" bolts each side after drilling the holes. When I put it on, I just slide it up on to the contour mounts, then crawl under and line up holes and insert bolts.
I wasn't sure who the post ... was for ... or ... in response to.
