My F150 5.4 100k miles shows a strange symptom...
I never changed any oil by myself as I am out in the bush and I don't want to deal with waste oil. Might sound strange but that's my way.
Every time when I get the oils checked and replaced where required (every 5k miles - new synthetic for motor), the shop guys are telling me the transfer case was overfilled when I came in. They correct it and next time when I show up, same story.
No matter which shop I go to, it is always the same message - transfer case overfilled.
Recently they told me a seal might leak so oil can migrate from one case to the other case, and I am looking into a big bill, potentially...
Keen to get your view and opinions, hoping for the best
Txs guys
Karl
I'm honestly not sure a t-case can be overfilled to the point of detriment, provided breathers aren't plugged it'll just eventually puke fluid. I think they have a fill level 'cause it's ENOUGH for the pump (which is just a crude eccentric) to do its job.
GM NV261s that cooked their fluid were actually RECOMMENDED to be over-filled by a whole quart, but ya had to use the breather hole to do it.
HOWEVER, yes, it's definitely a concern that the fluid is undoubtedly coming from the transmission.
And I guess there's the argument (internet lore I'd say) that MercV will cause your 'case to "explode" -- which I still argue does not apply to our F150s unless maybe you have one of the rare AWD F150s or Lincoln-badged trucks.
Thanks guys, this helped.
I have no clue how much oil the added to the transmission, so I'll check by myself how much overfill is there. Hope it is not like shown in the video.
As far as I understand the different oils, any mix of transmission and transfer case oil isn't good at all.
So having the seal replaced seems to be a must do.
Out here I have no tools to do it by myself, will see how much $$$ I am looking into for having it done in town.
