im about to put a new timing set in my 88 f150 with a 302 and i got a double roller to put on it. its got the 3 different keyways on it to advance it or retard it will advancing it help or hurt it. I think its 4 degrees. its basically just bone stock 302 accept for k and n and dual exhaust..
By advancing your timing you are essentially changing when your valves open in relation to your crankshaft rotation. The valves will open sooner on intake and could potentially draw more air and fuel into the cylinders. I would have to say that with only a few mods the advance probably won't help...it would probably hurt. I'm no expert in modified engines but I do understand the basics...and if your engine is staying close to stock, it would probably be best if you kept the timing there as well.
thanks for the info.. i will most likely set it straight up. the old chain is so loose you can take it off with out taking the gears off. think that was part of my power loss and rough idle..but i could be wrong
set it to the stock option I too am about to replace my timing chain set up and I went to the speed shop here and discussed this option with them and they stated that unless i change the cam and a few other componets. so i will be keeping it at the stock option. i dont feel like messing around with the computer yet.
