You guys with the 4.6, how hard to service? I've been kinda shopping for an Explorer and of course many are 4.0 equipped but see some 4.6 equipped here and there also. In my research found a reference that the 4.6 is kinda big for the engine compartment/hard to work on and to stick with the 4.0. I'm sure the smaller engine would serve my needs, but dang, I like a V8! And the 4.6 is a very reliable engine vs 5.4 of the same era. I've had a couple of 4.6 in other cars, but no experience with the 4.0.
Also, I've read the Explorer could be had with 4x4 or AWD. Were there 2 different versions of 4 wheel drive or is this just people describing the same thing different ways? I think of AWD as a full time high range kinda thing, where a true 4x4 (IMO) has 2 high, 4 high, and 4 low. That's what I want, not a AWD as described.
I'm wanting a comfortable all around vehicle that I can travel and sleep in. Good for going up north in January, or out west on dirt roads to ghost towns and what not.
