My rack came with a harness that plugged into the taillight connector on the passenger side frame rail by the spare. I think any attempt to hook into the wiring to the trailer makes the truck think a trailer is hooked up.

Either hack up the tail light harnesses behind the tail lights or buy the modular wiring harness from Magnum MFG that plugs in line with your rear end factory harness and gives you ground/stop/turn/tail/reverse without any splicing or cutting.
