I have this 1996 F150 Extended Cab Eddie Bauer 4x4 5.8 that sat for 8 years out in a field. Have been working on it slowly for a couple years and now it is almost done. I was charging the a/c system with the engine running and it just cut out like it ran out of fuel. Tried to restart, would sputter, then shut off. Its got good fuel pressure. I decided to open the air cleaner box to see if I had a mud dabber nest in there. Nothing. I had disconnected the hose between the engine and the MAF. I decided to restart it. It ran perfectly. As soon as I pressed the MAF back into the inlet it shut off. Checked for codes, got none. Has anyone ever seen this happen?
The thing is that it runs fine with the MAF removed from the intake air flow. As soon as it is pushed into the inlet hose the truck shuts off. I even used canned air to blow out any possible restrictions and still the same.
it runs down the road, or it sit's and idle's, did you test it, check the plug and wiring harness to MAF look in plug to harness and look in plug on MAF, make sure a pin isnt bent, I cant remember if IAT(is it plugged up) got moved to hose on air intake hose, between MAF and throttle body, or it stayed in the lower intake
It runs down the road and idles just fine until the MAF is shoved into the intake tube. It seems like as soon as there is airflow through the sensor it does not want to run. I ordered a new sensor for it. It was having some driveability issues before anyway. Lack of power under hard accel. Hopefully this will fix both issues.
did you test your MAF, if you didnt, and you put the $50 MAF in and you still have issue, now what, read this, it says to check, the old MAF, before purchasing/installing new MAF, check your plug on harness, and plug MAF make sure pins not bent(corroded sat for 8yrs), or they havent spread out and not make good contact PT74-0004V.pdf
I did check the harness. No signs of corrosion or bent wires. No codes. Will have to check again for leaks. It wont stay running long enough once everything is hooked back up right now. Its just really strange that is was running fine and all of a sudden it shut off like it ran out of gas. And it has been running for a couple years now. I am just now getting to the the rest of the issues to get it on the road.
what is fuel pressure reading on gauge, changed fuel filter(sat 8yrs) may need to change it again, and see what comes out usually lots an lots-o-crud, you could also check fuel pressure regulator(sat 8yrs read diaphragm dry rot), with gauge hooked up, and truck running, does fuel pressure go up when you blip the throttle, and settle back down, lets you know if regulator is working, pull vacuum line off regulator do you smell gas in vacuum line, its bad if you do
I replaced the rear tank, pump, and sending unit( I am not using the front tank for now until I replace the same things on it), and fuel filter about 1 year ago. I did not replace the regulator. I will check the pressure though.
I thought I had a gauge to test the fuel pressure. I have others, but not that for some reason so I havent been able to test it yet. The MAF did not fix it though.I ordered a regulator anyway since it make sense that was the last thing in the fuel system I didnt change. I have a gauge coming also.
