Trade-in question

First time I have run into this so tell if I’m crazy or the dealership is. Considering a new truck and went to see what they would offer on a trade. My current truck has a level kit, installed by a dealer and larger tires and aftermarket wheels. They are trying to tell me that the would need to replace the wheels and tires with something that would have been normally available on the truck and reducing the value accordingly to what it would cost them to do it. “They can’t sell it as it currently is.”
Personally I think they either have no clue what they are talking about or are trying rip me off. Side note, new sales manager, first day.

I am betting they will put your trade on the lot as it sits, however I will say that somethings are not everyones cup of tea. But if you are just leveled I am sure it is nothing un-godly so I am betting they are gunna try and rip you off.

I’ve heard that scenario on diesels that have been deleted, but not so much on a lift and tires. Guess it’s possible, though.

I have only heard of this when the vehicle still has factory bumper to bumper warranty left. If the dealer sells it with larger tires, the costumer assumes the warranty won’t be affected by the wheels and tires. I’ve heard a few bad dealerships blame bigger tires and after market rims on ball joint failures, tie rods etc. In the worst case scenario, the dealer and customer might be in for a good fight so the dealer wants the stock back on. This is very rare though and is usually just a ploy to give you a lower value.

That was a concern when I decided on the level. Also, the reason I had my dealer perform the level. (Different dealer)
Currently outside bumper to bumper but 10,000 miles left on powertrain.

What did you say to them after they told you this, and did they actually give you a number?

I had this type of go around with 4 or 5 dealerships who all had reasons why they could only offer 10k below book.

the last dealership gave me 500 bucks above book after giving me 9k off sticker. 2 days later they sold my truck for 7k above book.

Number was about $9,000 below book value. I told I was in no rush to sell, which I’m not. Sales person thought this didn’t sound right so they were going to look into it more. I’m pretty set on my number.

I’m sure that’s the plan on selling mine. If these forums are any indication then there are plenty of people looking for a leveled truck.

Find a dealer who will give you what its worth.

A level kit doesn't increase the wear on suspension parts. If anything it reduces the wear bc the level transfers weight to the rear axles lessening the load on the front suspension components. The wheels and tires could increase the wear if they are larger and heavier then stock.
So the only thing that would need to be changed is the wheels and tires back to OEM wheels & tires. Thats not going to cost $9K.

Crooks on crooks on crooks.

They are probably scared of death wobble issues.

Find another dealer. They aren't obligated to work with you.

Find another dealer that dealer is full of it. I trade mine all the time like that and nothing is said and probably 99% of the time it wont make it a week on the lot and its gone.

I think it depends on the market area. There are people that don’t want a lifted truck with custom rims. While it may look nice to you looks are subjective. The dealership may have had trouble selling a modified truck in the past. A lot of trade in go to auction, so they may be figuring all their going to get for the truck is auction price. It never hurts to try a few other dealerships.

I agree it depends on where you are. In my local area a few dealers seem to be installing lifts and larger tires/wheels to trucks on their lots.
In general I trade every 2-3 years so I don't go crazy with mods. I may put some larger tires on to fill the wheel well better along with some basic FORScan adjustments, mud flaps and a tri fold tonneau but it's all pretty basic stuff that's easily removed by me at trade time. I don't do suspension mods or anything that has to be done by someone else. I know there's a good chance the truck won't be long term so I don't dump a ton of money into something that has no return or a negative effect on trade.
