First time I have run into this so tell if I’m crazy or the dealership is. Considering a new truck and went to see what they would offer on a trade. My current truck has a level kit, installed by a dealer and larger tires and aftermarket wheels. They are trying to tell me that the would need to replace the wheels and tires with something that would have been normally available on the truck and reducing the value accordingly to what it would cost them to do it. “They can’t sell it as it currently is.”
Personally I think they either have no clue what they are talking about or are trying rip me off. Side note, new sales manager, first day.
I have owned 2 shops over the years one that focused on Corvettes the other on Offroad Jeeps. A lot of stuff that came rolling in was repairs of junk added and modified by the owner. Very little of the stuff found in the monthly rags works up to its hype and a fair amount of it not even for sale a year later it was so bad. The quest for more HP/Torque from the 'vette crowd and more off-road prowess by the Jeepers is never-ending. They all want it and are willing to spend to get it. Later many end up with a piece of JUNK on their hands and they head out to some car lot tying to convince some dealer is worth a lot of money because of all the parts they have put on it. Too often the dealer will take in trade and it becomes a nightmare for the dealer who gives a warranty on it.
My advice to you is find another dealer or find a dealer that has a lot of SD's on the lot with big tires/wheels/lifts etc. We got here in Texas, 50 + trucks everyone tarted up like a payday Friday hooker. That is their niche in the market. I know of one Ford dealer they will not have on the lot any trade-in that has been modified in any way, even a Ranch Hand grill guard on the front is either removed or the truck goes straight to wholesale. That said they have a department that sells the stuff, wheels, tires, lift kits etc and they install them but you will not find anything for sale on the lot that has been modified.
If I went to buy a used SD and it had a leveling kit, that is a no sale for me, so are oversized tires and wheels. I would maybe take the truck if they remove those mods!
I am currently looking for a used Jeep to buy, 2004-2006 LJ and I will NOT buy any Jeep that has major mods such as a lift kit. Almost ALL lift kits are nothing but a compromise in performance and provide few gains.
Why not take it to the original dealer and when they low ball you tell them you want book plus half the money you gave them for the mods they did?
I would but it’s a GMC 2500. Always had Fords, this was my first, going back to a SD.
I know without pics it’s tough to tell, but this is just 2.5” level with tires that just fill the wheel well. And done by the dealer just to eliminate questions on warranty. Other than that a stock truck, no tunes etc.

Thanks for all the replies.
Dealer that took my Chevy in on my new SD didn't say anything about mine except that the tires were near the useful life, it was a fair point and I agreed. Truck had a 5" rough country knuckle lift and some larger than stock Toyo RT's. I wasn't supposed to trade that evening and had a glass claim replacement setup the next day for my windshield that was cracked bad from recent road construction, they said nope! we have glass guys don't worry about it.
Facebook photos told me that they didn't replace the tires, stuck it on their lot and had it sold in about a week.
Just like 17 OAKS said.... here in TEXAS, its a little different, but regardless, I think your dealer is playing you to get more profit.
Considering how everyone is going ape-***** over the new Tremor (awesome truck btw), I cant see how they think they would have ANY problem selling your truck as long as the wheels compliment the truck and are not full blown outrageous. Find a different dealer or sell on your own. Selling private is always better. Especially since you said you were in no hurry to sell it. The pitfall is that it could sell sooner than you want as well.

The only pain other than the timing the sale is that I’d have to sell it at least $4000 more than I’m looking at getting for trade to just offset the sales tax savings from trading.
I traded in a very clean 2005 F150XLT SCab 5.4L on my F250. The dealership only gave me about 1/3 of book because the CarFAX indicated a collision repair. They asked me what happened and I told them. It was parked in front of a car audio/alarm installer having a remote start installed and a old guy ran off the road and hit my parked truck. Jacked up the bumper, fender, and liner.
The truck never made it to the lot, one of the mechanics at the dealership bought it.
Here in lies the pitfall of modifying your truck. You reduce the trade in value of the truck.
If you can't find a dealership willing to work with you, then consider selling the truck yourself.
Otherwise maybe suggest that the dealer swap tires and wheels between the new truck and the old one? That'd get them stock tires and wheels like they want and maybe not reduce the value of your trade-in.
There's nothing objectionable about that truck. It makes it look a little more that they're trying to squeeze you a bit. If you're still dealing with them, tell them your bottom line. If they can't get there -and I mean can't get there without shifting the numbers onto the new truck- then thank them for their time.

They were only the first dealer I spoke to, several others in the area. No real need for a new truck so I have all the time I need. Sales person is still working on it, I’ll give her some time. Been a customer of this dealership for over 30 years. Loyal to them but if need to go elsewhere I will.
Number was about $9,000 below book value. I told I was in no rush to sell, which I’m not. Sales person thought this didn’t sound right so they were going to look into it more. I’m pretty set on my number.

I know about timing. I ordered my 2020 at end of Nov. Listed and sold my truck within 2 weeks for $5000 more than dealer offered me. Now im driving my old beater as a daily driver hoping the ball joints last another 4-6 weeks, lol.
But considering the dealer is offer $9000 below book and you need a least $4000 to break even on the deal, I'd still try to sell private. You have a $5000 window to play with. Won't hurt a thing to list it high and see how it goes.
