Hey Folks,
Time for me to put new tires on my EX. Currently running YOKO. I pull a camper that is about 7000# Loaded. From experience I'd like to know what would be a good tires for this set up that won't break the bank. I cannot afford to get the best but I don't want two ply sidewalls either. Thanks a lot.
If you're looking for just a highway tire, I recommend the Michelin LTX MS2. I had a set go 100K on a Tahoe and on the X, I'm at about 50K (at least) and last time I measured the tread depth, they were still almost "new". If I can find the paperwork on them, I can figure out how many miles are actually on them and I'l remeasure.
If you're looking for something a little more on the AT side, I know folks that went with the BFG's and are happy with them from a noise standpoint. Mileage, as with just about all AT tires (it seems), won't be 100K for sure. Probably plan on replacing in 50K.
For my money, I like the LTX's because I know they'll last a long time. The down side is, any mud at all will put you in 4WD immediately.
In any tire, just make sure you get 10 ply (Load Range E these days, but I call them 10 ply).
Ive had KO2's and have treated me well (recent on my old 04 Land Cruiser) and great in the snow. actually current (new to me) Ex I just bought has them, but in dire need of new ones t. and came across a great deal on a set of rims by Black Rhino that are 17-9 so since I need to buy tires anyway it worked out.
KO's are definitely on my list but also might try some Falken wild peaks. but will stay with at AT type tire for my needs and uses.
have a buddy with a set of brand new Goodyear MTR's, but they are only C rated not E. and Id have to lift if I took on a 35' tire.
so IM still deciding
I tow a 24' enclosed with heavy cars in it. I have air bags and an OEM rear sway bar from a SD. I run Cooper AT3's, E rated. 305's. Love them. Great tire. I would highly recommend. Im on my second set and will be buying them again....maybe 315's next time.
For my money, I would not buy Michelins. The Goodyears with the kevlar sidewalls seem pretty good. I have them on my Dads SD.
Cooper STT Maxx are some of the best tires I’ve used and I run about 2400 miles of oilfield roads a month. I have STT Pros on my Excursion and they are just as great. The wear, grip, handling etc are awesome. I’ve had BFG AT KO2’s, Toyo AT, Pathfinder etc and they were just ok. Toyo and BFG seem to have gone to a softer compound which is a shame because the old BFG AT was the best all around tire you could get.
I also second both the Falken Wildpeak HT's in LT, and Cooper Discovery ATP3's in LT's. I've had both on different vehicles and both handled wet/dry and snow very well and have good tread wear. The Falkens are a 60k tire and Coopers are 55k. The Coopers are alot more of an aggressive tread pattern than the Falkens but was surprised how good the Falkens were. I tow alot and both are/were great for 8k to 10k loads.
BTW, I always get my tires at Wallyworld... if I have a tire issue anywhere I am I can always get it fixed there for free with the roadhazzard warranty. And, no wallyworld doesnt get the "reject" tires like everyone says they do!
I've have good luck with Firestone Transforce HT on my 2wd X. The current set is 2 years old and still look brand new. Great alternative to Michelins at a better price.
