Engine and electric questions

Okay so two questions.
I recently bought a 93' 7.3 IDI non turbo, and I have a 96' 7.3 Powerstroke with a blown out transmission. How hard would it be to take the turbo off my 96' and fit it on my 93'?
My second question is, how difficult is it for me to put a OBD2 system on my 93'? Should I just swap the whole motor and electrical stuff for the motor over or no? I really don't want to swap around the motors as my 96' has 350k miles on it minus the turbo. The turbo has 50k on it. And my 93' has only 130k on it. What do you guys think is the best for my 93'?

IDI and PSD are 2 different animals the parts do not interchange so you will have much work to fit a PSD turbo on an IDI.

there is no need for OBDII on an IDI engine as there no electronic controls on the IDI. so there is no point. Unless you want to put the PSD engine and tranny in the 93 then again you have much work.

That clears a lot of questions I have. Would there even be a OBD system on a IDI that has a manual transmission? And as far as figuring out what to do I am just curious to see which route would be best with putting a turbo on my IDI. I will say on a side note I pretty much stole my IDI for the price I paid and the milage it has.

If you want a turbo for your 7.3 IDI then find one in a salvage yard. Or you can still buy new ones if you don't mind spending a hefty price:

https://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/...rd-diesel.aspx

I used this website to find the spare 7.3l IDIT I bought from a Ft. Worth, TX salvage yard a few years ago.

Right, on an IDI with a Manual Tranny there is no PCM, ... with E4OD then you have the OBD EEC IV PCM

94 is a weird year as they produced both IDI and DI engine so some vehicles had an OBD2 connector within 3 foot of the driver but was non functional on the IDI for more information on the DI engine and electrics the PSD forums are a good source of information.

I checked out that website and I found one for pretty cheap in the city I live, now it's time to convince the wife to let me buy it lol. How hard is it to tune the IDIs to work with the turbo?

So pretty much if I wanted to tune my IDI I would have to go old school on it?

Yepper, Pump and injector Calibrations is all. A Dyno would be right Handy,

Most the folks I know down here just put a Turbo kit on without really knowing the true specs of the Turbo and then adding Larger injectors and Max the IP out so they can Roll Coal.. pretty irresponsible IMHO

you need to do some math ... here is a good starting place https://www.fulltiltperformance.com/...r-cars-engine/

it's never recommended to slap a turbo on a high mileage engine without at least doing a service to the Heads .. I also recommend either a single or dual EGT Gauge.

not hard at all. put the turbo on, and put an exhaust temp gauge on.
turn up the fuel in the injector pump 1-2 flats and give it a try. if you see black smoke at full throttle, the you need to turn the fuel down.

EGT is so you can watch exhaust temps. you want to keep it below around 1100 degrees.

Here's the pyrometer I installed on my truck. It works great!

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/atm-2654

Now all I have to do is get around to installing the turbo.

theirs no need to turbo a idi anyways. you can get near the same boost the turbo gives just by running straight pipes.

I love the sound of the turbo off my 96' 7.3 Powerstroke. Plus I do also plan on straight piping and doing some custom headers. I have always known the 7.3 to be turboed anyway. So might as well go all out if I'm gonna spend the money might as well boost it as well

Good luck with IDI Headers....... Yes they make em.....

But you will have a Hell of a time installing the turbo and expecting much out of it .... Stock Manifolds are much better

no way, no how, never happen.
boost is from the turbo, not the exhaust pipes.
a turbo can add as much as 50 HP. open pipes MAYBE 3-5 hp

agreed.. headers, or turbo. doing both is a waste of time and money.
