Hello I’m still looking around at trucks and went to look at a 1966 long bed today. Everything from the front of the truck up to the bed looked fine. Then there was the bed. On the left everything was fine and straight but on the right side there was quite a big hole. I wanted to know about how much it would cost to fix a rust hole of this size? Rough estimates $$? Are there other panels made to replace the outside of a style side bed?
Sorry I didn’t post a picture purely out of respect for the current owner(since I only have looked at the truck and not purchased). I have only went to look at it today, it’s about 8ish inches wide by 4in tall

if there’s an 8”x4” rust hole in the side of the bed, I think you need to give the rest of the truck a better look. More than likely that the rest of it is rusted worse than you think. Did you get underneath and look at the front cab mounts, cab corners, underside of the bed, bottom portion of radiator support, roof above the drip rails, etc? You’d be well served to get some pics and post ‘em here for folks to help guide you.
I did in fact check all that and it all seemed in very good condition. Nothing was rusted through from the front bumper to the back of the cab. The only issue is the driver fender is dented so that would have to be fixed but I don’t see that as a major issue. Cab mounts, radiator support was all good too.
I find it odd that it’s just on the one side of the bed but from what I saw everything looked just fine and has a little surface rust.
the only picture I have are from the online listing and they aren’t that clear, but I’ll get them up
There are no new or reproduction panels available for the sides of the bed but a relatively small 4" x 8" hole should not be that big of a deal to repair. If that is the only rust repair on the entire truck count yourself lucky.
It in fact is aside from the 1/4in plugged holes in the roof (used to have antenna) that’s the only holes, I think I may go ahead and get it, but that’s if I get everything settled with insurance, so if it happens I will post pictures
Konnor: Is it possible the truck had an auxiliary fuel tank, which was later removed, and the hole is where the filler neck was?
But as far as how much would it cost to fix, I would not be able to put an accurate number to it without at least a picture.
The location of the hole plays a big part in the amount of work involved. (ie: how much access to the back, how much contour in the area of the hole, etc)
