Modifying FX4 Suspension

I am looking to buy leftover 2019 F150 and it looks like the best deals are XLT with the 302a package. After having my dealership search hundreds of dealerships for the one that I wanted he finally found one. Then I noticed that it had the FX4 suspension and I asked him if it was a rougher ride. Of course he said no so I asked if he could get two trucks with identical wheel package but one with FX4 and another without. Im glad I drove both because the FX4 bucked over speed bumps and was definitely rougher over certain bumps. After trying to find another truck with everything I wanted he couldn't come up with anything. We then discussed Fox shocks but I wondered if the springs are the same rate on the FX4 compared to the standard suspension. If so, will Fox shocks make it a better ride or should I just stick with looking for non FX4 suspension?

Well hate to break it to you but the FX4 trucks are the same as base 4x4 trucks. There is no suspension difference. It's a bed decal, skid plates and a button on the dash. Anything you feel is difference in spring rates due to options not because of the FX4 package.

The front shocks are different.... or were in '17.

Drive it for a while and see if it smooths out.
My FX4 rides great.

The rear may be a little rough. If that's the case get some Bilstein's for the rear.

My wife's last two FX4 equipped trucks('12 and '18)ride smooth. Her current 2018 has the Max tow package with 20" wheels also and it still rides great.

Maybe the one you drove had 20” wheels vs 18” or it had load range C tires.

Mine came with 20" and I would prefer the 18" for more sidewall and a better ride.

yes, just ordered a 2020 with the FX4 package. According to Ford, the front shocks are supposed to be some special kind.

I’ve recently been doin some research on the FX4 package since i’m swapping my XTR stickers for FX4. My truck is a Canadian XTR, as well as an FX4. For whatever reason the XTR gets the sticker nod, mind boggling since it’s just some chrome bling.

Anyway the FX4 DOES have different off road shocks, so I imagine it would ride stiffer. I added Bilsteins in the rear of my truck with good results.

FX4-
Shocks
Skid Plates
Hill decent
Electronic Locking rear axle
Decal

Some sources say they come higher? Not sure about this. Sounds like a good science experiment with a tape measure at the dealer.

Ok, so I got back to the dealer today and asked if the FX4 truck had 18" wheels and it turns out that it actually had the 20". I cant believe I didnt notice when I walked around the truck, Duh. So I am going to assume that the shorter, stiffer sidewall doesnt work well with the stock suspension. Im glad I asked here, you guys rock. Now it time to prepare the 5.0 for the Whipple after I get some miles on this thing. Thanks!

Stiffer side walls are more of a function of load rating than anything else. My Nitto Ridge Grapplers ride just as good as my stocks did since they're not E rated like many others in the size. My 20s ride fine.
