The other day I was helping a friend with a '96 OBS do a little troubleshooting. We used Forscan on my PC to do an injector buzz test. During that process we disconnected two injectors.
I was under the impression that what you are supposed to hear is all of the injectors buzzing together at first, then each of the eight injectors buzzing individually. However, with the two injectors disconnected, we still heard eight distinct buzzes (after the initial group buzz).
Someone else recently mentioned the same thing in a thread. The other injectors still buzz, although very faintly. We just usually can't tell from inside the cab

Huh... Doesn't seem like it would be nearly as useful of a test, if they all buzz at once.
Thinking back... and my memory is terrible.... but was thinking it buzzed each injector, then the last was all eight at once. And do it when the engine is cold, like first thing in the morning before you crank it.

Maybe it depends on the software? I used Forscan, and for sure it did all eight and then each individually.

I did, but just out of curiosity, is there some harm in buzzing warm injectors? Or are you saying that it is just a better troubleshooting tool if it is cold?

Even with (hypothetically) all eight unplugged? That is the basis of my question, is there anything else (e.g. a relay) that buzzes during the test? I am assuming that the injector drivers are solid state, even in the older trucks. Seems like they would have to be. But with two of the injectors disconnected, we still heard eight buzzes, and they all seemed like the same volume. My ear may not be as well-trained for this...
With one or two injectors unplugged, you can hear a buzz when it’s time for those to buzz - but the noise will come from the other injectors.
Thanks very much for clarifying that.
Kind of surprised this is how it works. It seems like it would be so much more useful if it buzzed each injector completely individually.

It does. Unless there is a open line or a short to ground. In those instances it’s possible to hear a ‘ghost buzz’ on other injectors.
