Rather than try and replace the existing turn signal unit, I'd like to convert to a toggle switch that does the work. This will make it easier for me to add a switch for hazards and then also mount the switch for my reverse lights at a later date. Could anyone help me with figuring out the wiring diagram for this setup? I read somewhere that I could use a trailer brake light conversion box to run to the toggle switch, but I'm a bit at a loss how everything lines up. Didn't pay all that much attention in my EE class in college, hindsight is 20/20.
There is no practicing with wiring. My biggest regret with some of my first vehicles 40 some years ago was to make them better until they got towed out of the driveway.
Fair enough. Thankfully my dad is an engineer who's done his fair share of electrical work throughout his career, so I can call him if need be. This is a pretty simple system to work with, so I'm not too afraid.
I agree that this doesn't seem like the best idea but I'll bite. The first thing I would do is take the original turn signal switch and the original wiring diagram, sit down with a continuity tester and find out what wires connect with what in all three positions. Once you have that drawn out that will help you determine what type of switch you need, DP3T or something more complicated.
That's a good idea navy. I found this diagram on a hot rodding website earlier this week. I've already studied the wiring diagram for the OEM switch and know how all the wiring fits together. The thing that has me curious is how the box in the diagram works. From the research I've done it looks like a series of diodes and a transistor somewhere in there. Not that I need to know what goes on in said box, I just want to know how it works if it breaks.
The turn signal switch is the most complicated circuit in these trucks.
I ca vouch for that statement. I went 12 rounds with my turn signals. From bad taillight sockets, broken wires, a plugged up brakelight switch, faded wire colors, some OP under the dash with electrical tape and wire nuts, to two POS aftermarket switches. I finally got them working last night with a switch from Shee-mar. $57 and some change delivered. I have been changing lanes and turning at every opportunity just so I can use them LoL.
That's one of the reasons I'm hesitant about trying to make one of the aftermarket ones work. I don't want to go several rounds with ones that go out quickly.
Not yet. The timing in my other truck decided to go out a couple weeks ago so I haven't had the luxury to tear things down on the 66 as it's now my daily. I ordered everything and have what I need to do the conversion, just need to sit down and plan it out before I start cutting into things.

Ok cool.
Hope you document well and some wiring diagrams etc.
Very interested.
