Changing the differentials and transfer case fluids. Differentials pretty straight forward. Transfer case my manual states XL-12. Found one Ford publication that states XL-12 should not be used in transfer cases after 2012. Seems Mercon LV is the new Mercon we should be using. I have some high quality synthetic Mercon V equivalent and some high quality synthetic ISO 32 and 64. Reviewing most of the Mercon products, the specifications are very close to ISO 32. Looking at many posts here and on other pages, seems people are running a lot of different products in their transfer cases with no ill effects. A lot of opinions, but little technical data. The link below does give a little more info from Ford. Hope it helps the technical fanatics out there.
Different manufacturers have different additives even though the base product might be the same. The materials used for the components vary between manufacturers which is why it is not usually recommended to use a 'works-for-all' lubricant.
This is why I always use manufacturer lubricants as they have the required additives for their clutches/gears/etc.
I did my transfer case in 2018 when I did my trans. My local dealer still had XL12 in stock. When I first started seeing threads like this, I called and asked if they had XL12 in stock and they did not. He said Mercon LV is now called for use in the transfer case. When I do mine this year at 60k, Motorcraft Mercon LV it will be.
FTM has a video about how Merc V can grenade your 'case....and honestly that baffles me. I think it must be only "auto" cases with clutches. For a basic manual or electric shift 'case it only needs a light oil. I don't see how Merc V could possibly hurt an NV271 or BW1356....NOT that I'm recommending trying it.
I use Valvoline Transfer Case Fluid (synthetic) only 'cause I got it at .88/qt when TSC was blowing it out (retail $9/qt). It meets specs for basically everything incl GM AutoTrak II, etc. I put the Valvoline in my '11 SuperDuty 25k miles ago, no problems to date.
