Early model 6.8L Y-pipe, people do a cat-back exhaust with a less restrictive muffler and then complain about a fluttering sound, I took one look at the crossover and it's really easy to see why there is a flutter in the exhaust because it sure ain't butterflies
The hot exhaust gases from 5 cylinders come flying down the pipe at the top and run slap into a wall where they are forced to make a sharp 90-degree turn after getting T-boned by the hot exhaust gases from the other 5 cylinders.
That fluttering is the sound of the exhaust gases from 5 cylinders slamming into a wall and if the crossover pipe was shaped more like a Y and less like a T the fluttering would not exist.
If you ever heard a header tick then you already know what I'm talking about..
And if you're really serious about making power then invest in a merge collector from Vibrant.
Gibson, they are exact fit replacements for the factory so a new Y pipe was not needed. That is why I got the 5-Star Y pipe. I've had my Ex for just over a year now and purchased this shortly after, neither has been installed yet.
I installed the 5 Star y-pipe on my '04 and had the flutter. After tuning with 5 Star tuning performance tune and a Jones 303xl muffler, flutter went away.
It's funny that the pictured "Y" pipe (which is an aftermarket version of the OEM design) is actually Fords "fix" for the flutter that was reported by folks with the earlier design Rams Horn pipe, which flowed better.
Maybe im deaf, but with my stock T pipe and now with the Banks headers and full flow Y pipe I have never heard this flutter, or maybe I have and just never gave it any thought.....?

Same here. I had a 99 with the original Y then put on Borla headers, never heard it. On my 02 with new Y and since Doug Thorley headers never heard it. Maybe I don't know what it sounds like??
