Check this out!!
The heads were junk, yet I was charged for a valve job. Both heads were cracked. One was a 1/2 deep between the intake and exhaust valves on one cylinder. The other may have came out with machine work to install new valve seats. The valves were not even sealing. The seats looked they had been shot with a shotgun. All the guides were shot. He replaced one guide and said the rest were fine, which I never understood. I thought if one was bad surely more than that was bad on a 23 year old motor. Same with the valve seats, he had replaced one and said the others were fine. Man I could start flaming here.
If I knew I would not get in trouble somehow I would post the name on here of the establishment that did this crummy work. Believe me I have passed it around my area though. Oh yes, The bores had not been finished honed properly so it ate the piston rings up.
I just found out a few days ago this so-called machinist is also a small time politician in his nearby town. Imagine that. Take your money and get nothing in return. Get lied to, deceived and ripped off. He must have politicked the same way he machined, because he was ousted from office in the elections from November.
That is why mine coming back out in the spring, I think I 'll build a short block this winter I want to run a set of 351c K.B. flat tops and I want the motor balanaced my heads should be fine but i'll have them checked and decked about .060, port and polish.
I think I have one more carb adjustment and then I got it.

This was the same motor that I had told you the machinist had left the very same plug out of as yours, but I caught it while installing the timing set.
That was a clue to how it was going to turn out.
Crummy machine work can kill the best of projects.
I worked and worked on that 1406 and I was pretty happy with it until a buddy offered a 1405 for 75.00 and I bought it and swapped them today and I'll tell you its a big big improvement over the other It was a totally stock carb and It's right and thats real cool.
The 460 is doing fine so far. It has almost a 1000 miles on it. I can hardly get my son to drive it now, he bought a 97 powerstroke 4x4 this summer and he wants to drive it for the fuel mileage. For some reason he thinks 19 is better than 11.
Glad to hear the carb situation worked out good.
The 1405 has a little fatter primary jet and a dab smaller diameter metering rod than the 1406. This would give you just a bit more fuel.
Must be the right combo for you.
My son loves it. He hates cars as he can't hardly fit in any of them. He is 6' 8". And no, I'm not kidding.
So like he says, he kinda has his cake and can eat it too. Plenty of head and leg room and good enough fuel mileage to be able to actually drive it.
He has souped it up a bit. He has a B D X power chip in it, Tymar intake system, 3" DPPI down pipe from the turbo. Its almost as or is as fast as the 460. It will run 0-60 (unofficially) in less than 9 seconds. And still gets 18.5 - 19 mpg combined driving.
I have not felt torque that thing produces now, since back in the late 60's to 1970 when the big block muscle cars died. I mean this thing drills you into the seat. It's like, you know this just isn't right, a big 4x4 truck moving like this, but dang its fun and it will sure put a silly grin on your face.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I have seen that.
I would like to see that truck in the flesh.
I'll let you know this summer when that diesel extravaganza is going to be in Terre Haute again.
Lots of sreaming turbo's and black smoke.
Best mileage to date is a smidge over 13 mpg on a road trip with the cruise set.
The swapped, carbed, 460 in my 82 gets better mileage than the 400 did. It never got over 11 mpg.
The power difference between the two is considerable. And I'm talking stock verses stock.
In my personal experience, every 300 six I ever had got no better mileage than a V-8, and sure ran a lot worse. Took a mile to get from 55 to 65 mph. Just kidding, but it was close.
yours must have been out of repair my 84 300 6 gets 24 MPG on the highway, 0-60 in 11 second :P
The speed comment was a little tounge in cheek. That particular truck was a stick too.
The trucks I mentioned were 1/2 ton 4x4's with 3.54 gears.
They were not out of repair. One was a with new long block from Ford with a reman carb in perfect tune. I was a Ford tech once upon a time. I keep my stuff up good.
