Recently picked up a 1967 f250 camper special, Attempted a cold start with the choke , it cranked for a bit and ran for about 30 second until I started messing with the choke **** then died. I waited a couple minutes to try again and it won’t even crank now. I’ve only had the truck for a couple of days and it seemed to be fine when I picked it up. Started right up multiple times and drove it about 80 miles no issues.
my first thought was that I flooded it but it’s to dark and cold right now to tinker so I thought I’d try and get some insight/ ideas for tomorrow.
When you say "it won't even crank now" I assume you are referring to it won't even turn over? That's what cranking means. If so, it has nothing to do with the choke. It's more of an electrical issue.
If you mean it wont even "fire now" then it sounds like a fuel related issue. Try looking down the carb while depressing the throttle to see if it's getting fuel. It could just be coincidental that it is now starving for fuel after using the choke, which should have no effect on fuel flow.
A "new" old truck like this - you've got some checking to do, the list of possibilities is practically endless at this point.
My advice is always the same, there are some diagnostics to be done that are pretty straightforward, but for some reason are usually avoided or skipped by many.
Basically the first order of business is an assessment or finding out exactly what you have to work with. Ideally, the engine will be found to be in basically sound, good mechanical condition, and will simply need a good thorough Tune-Up. But before buying a pallet of $$ parts and equipment, it is wise to dig into the basics. This will ultimately save lots of time, money, and frustration. You may have to spend a little money just to see what's what. First thing is to ensure the battery is 100% serviceable and charged up. Either buy a new one, charge it up, borrow one, etc.
Replace all of the ratty corroded battery and starter cables. Trust Me. Then perform an engine compression test by the book. If the engine is lunched, excessively worn rings, burned valves etc, a Tune-Up is a complete waste of time and money. Want to determine this first, not last.
won’t turn over, I just thought it was weird that it happened after messing with the choke. I’m going to check battery and starter first, when you turn the ignition it clicks once and nothing.
My truck had a intermittent start problem where it wouldn't crank. After replacing the starter and solenoid i finally figured out that the bare copper wires on my battery terminal clamps were corroded so i snipped them and skinned back the insulation and put the clamp back on. So now it works without fail.

good to know. I got it running after replacing the solenoid and messing with the shifter I’m thinking it was the safety neutral switch or a combination of a bunch of stuff. I’ll go through the wiring and replace the starter just to be sure though. But for now she’s up and running.
