Pull one spark plug lead and plug. Hold the electrode to the block so it's grounded. Turn the engine over and verify you have a healthy spark. If you have fresh plug wires you can just hold it with your hand. If you think the plug wires are old and could leak voltage, use leather gloves. Being a part of the path to ground is no fun. If you do this at night or evening you may be able to observe sparks jumping from bad wires to the engine (if the plug wires are old and cracked).
