I mounted my magnetic one higher, next to the glove box cover. It actually overlaps the glove box cover a little but that's OK because
a) I rarely open it and when I have to it is easy to remove the cupholder and
b) the glovebox cover used to fall open occasionally. Problem solved.
And it works great there - holds the cups practically vertical.
This is in my truck build thread, but I figured I'd post it here to make it easier for people to find:
Cupholders: I got on Amazon and spent a whopping $12 on a cupholder meant to fit between a bucket seat and a console. Wrapped a 2x4 in black vinyl just because I had it and added an extra touch, wedged it between the seat bottom and carpet, and screwed the cupholder to it. Works awesome and looks like it belongs!
Outstanding! Just today I was researching cup holders and universal map pockets for the lower part of the door to get more storage. What is the diameter of the cup holder? Looks a little shallow whereas a taller cup may tip out. Want to make sure my Yeti fits!
I made my own console because it had to be shorter in the seat for the manual transmission. I've posted some plans in a build thread if anyone is interested. One suggestion however is to widen it at least 2 inches.

Its called the Heart Horse cupholder. They have all the specs on Amazon. I'm too lazy to measure. And it is only $10.99 now.
I liked the idea of the GM cup holder but didn't want to mount permanently to the dash. 3D printed a rare earth magnet holder and it doesn't budge a bit. Anyone know of a good source for matching green paint? Temporarily hot glued. Will epoxy once painted.

A few years back I bought the LMC ashtray insert type cup holder. The first time I tried to use it, the cup was too big to fit. It is also awkward and in the way. I tossed it in a bin and never took it out again.
I found a 3D print cup holder for our trucks. It hangs on the ash tray and works pretty well.
